Nomination is Christie's to lose?

I'm having a hard time seeing how Chris Christie doesn't walk away with thing at this point, and I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. There's plenty to like about him, though I don't know too much about his foreign policy.

At this point, I don't think Rand can knock him off. I don't think Cruz can knock him off. It's hard to believe Perry could given how terribly he fared the last time around.

There's a lot to happen between then and now - but that's kind of the point. Christie is going to be travelling the country campaigning for governors and raising a ton of cash. And to boot, he's winning a lot of democrats over - he'd have to to win as large as he has in Jersey. He's winning blue dogs over with tough love. He's basically selling conservative ideas minus the Jesus, and what we're seeing is that there's a huge base of democrats that eat it up like Alpo.

Christie is a real problem for the Democrats because if they're running Hillary, they're running her as a leftist version of Christie, and he's going to suck all of the air out of that conversation.

It's hard to imagine right now who is going to beat this juggernaut. I don't think Christie needs either Christian conservatives or libertarians to win. I think he'll pull enough out of the Democrat column to manage just fine.

You are also someone who actually pays attention to what is going on more so than the average voter. I'm just saying, we as a society are visually/symbolically centered. The visual of Christie hugging Obama is what did the most damage. It is what got the most air play from the press as well. And I maintain that it was because they had a visual they could show/promote.

As a specific individual, I agree with the sentiment that it was all disgusting and deplorable. But we do not constitute the average voter.

So, I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the workings of the parties, but does Christie really have a shot? I'm not sure I've heard anyone in this thread really suggest that he has a legit shot.

I've always thought he was a punch line.

He's the establishment's leading candidate right now.

Now, while the party is split among itself and jockeying for position, Christie is effectively the establishment Republican standard bearer. Not only did he just win big in New Jersey, flexing considerable political muscle when you look at the demographic break down, but he's also the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, which will give him a considerable budget and the opportunity to campaign around the country, especially during the mid term elections. There are 36 governors up for election in 2014 He's got a huge stage on which to launch a campaign. If there is anyone better positioned than Christie right now, I can't imagine who it is.

That's not an endorsement. I'm just stating facts about current position.

I think he definitely has a shot. He could have had a shot last time around if he would have run.

Christie has a shot, but he has the problem of the modern moderate Republican. If he doesn't appeal to the far right - that is, the Tea Party - he'll get primaried by someone who does, who will then get pummeled in the general election (this happened to Richard Lugar last year, among others). If he does appeal to the far right enough to convince a lot of them to campaign, donate, and show up to vote, then he'll lose so much of the middle that he'll get pummeled himself in the general election (that'd be Mitt Romney, and John McCain before him).

He has lots of charisma, which is a pretty good ingredient to being able to bridge that gap, but it's still a long way to go.

Christie has the same problem McCain and Romney and Dole had.

The media and liberals always cheer for moderate Republican candidates because they're so easy to beat on election day.

Christie seems to be much more popular than any of those other candidates were with the general public, and being that he's been elected in such a blue state he's probably already been subjected to the withering character assassination that leftist campaign organizations are known for. Maybe he could actually win?

You're over-reaching. And no, my post didn't assume that. Which, of course, makes you wrong about everything here.

What happened is SOP for major disasters. Disaster happens, POTUS flies in a couple of days after, takes tour with governor, meets families, and does some kind of PC. There was nothing unique about it other than it happened right before an election. If this had happened a year before and Christie did the same thing no one would be upset at him.

And Yeah Christie said nice things about Obama and I realize for some Republicans that is a line that can never be crossed but he was just doing his job and his fellow governors agree with him about the way he handled it.

Christie doesn't bullshit.

I think the American people need to hear the truth and what needs to be done. I don't agree with Christie, and I dislike the established assholes, but he is probably the best shot at fixing the debt problem.

He might actually be able to lead. What a concept!

Yep, all of this. I think 16 is going to be a unique election in which your typical bullshit issues like abortion and gay marriage take a back seat to getting our financial house in order and "leadership". I'm pretty sure at no point have people ever been more fed up with your typical DC politician and the fighting between Dems and Republicans.
