Nomination is Christie's to lose?

I'm having a hard time seeing how Chris Christie doesn't walk away with thing at this point, and I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. There's plenty to like about him, though I don't know too much about his foreign policy.

At this point, I don't think Rand can knock him off. I don't think Cruz can knock him off. It's hard to believe Perry could given how terribly he fared the last time around.

There's a lot to happen between then and now - but that's kind of the point. Christie is going to be travelling the country campaigning for governors and raising a ton of cash. And to boot, he's winning a lot of democrats over - he'd have to to win as large as he has in Jersey. He's winning blue dogs over with tough love. He's basically selling conservative ideas minus the Jesus, and what we're seeing is that there's a huge base of democrats that eat it up like Alpo.

Christie is a real problem for the Democrats because if they're running Hillary, they're running her as a leftist version of Christie, and he's going to suck all of the air out of that conversation.

It's hard to imagine right now who is going to beat this juggernaut. I don't think Christie needs either Christian conservatives or libertarians to win. I think he'll pull enough out of the Democrat column to manage just fine.

I tend to agree. As long as the candidate is not a zealot (ie Santorum..etc), which I don't think Christie is, they should be fine.

And everybody knows a guy like Mormon Mitt who may be well pedigreed, but doesn't really carry the same gravitas.

Christie appeals across party lines in a way that I think few politicians are even capable of. Like Cochise says, it's personality politics.

I don't see what is surprising about supporting Obama at that time. I'm an issues guy, and Obama was hitting all of my issues at that time. Everyone sees Obama as the lying, incompetent person that he is today, but back at the time, nobody knew who he was outside of what he was saying. And what he was saying was that he was going to end the war. That he was going to stop raising the debt ceiling. That he was going to close guantanamo. That we weren't going to torture prisoners. That due process was important.

It's why I can sympathize with the fools who have been snookered by him and actually ended voting for him. He says pretty words. Of course, the more I learned about Obama's economic policies, the less I liked him. But economics weren't my top issue coming out of 2006. The war was, and Obama was the only person on the national stage saying anything about ending the war at that time until Ron Paul announced in March of 2007.

Also my prediction that Obama was going to win came before he even ... announced as a candidate. My projections are money. I occasionally go a bridge too far, but I'm always in the neighborhood.

This is my favorite point, because it would end up being all the enlightened righty Dems who would buck this "made for TV candidate" thing. You're right though, it's been a long time since we elected a fat guy for the chair.

I don't know a single conservative from anywhere except the coast(s) that can STAND Christie. I'd be amazed if he could win the primary. Not a chance in HELL he wins Texas unless the entire field is crap or it's just him and some super fringe candidate at that point.

One other thing before I get back to work... Threads like this don't constitute me being "on Christie's bandwagon." Right now, my vote is going to Gary Johnson. But I'm a politico at heart, so I'm talking about Christie as a candidate because right now, as far as I'm concerned, he's the leading guy on both sides. No one has the momentum that Christie has at this intersection in time.

I hear that, but wasn't the same thing being said about both Romney and McCain? Hell, even Bush.

The establishment guy ends up getting the nomination. The last 2 were particularly weak, but I don't see Christie as being anywhere near as weak as McCain and Romney were. Do you?

Nope. Not in Texas. Christie is ACTIVELY disliked, hell even HATED by some. I know droves upon droves of voters who simply will NOT vote for him. Period. Put him up as the candidate and you've lost the base.

You think ridiculous, most think fact in a presidential election. You get pregant by rape and the government owns your body for 9 months. What happened to individual liberty to make our own decidions? Keeping government out of our lives?
