Karl Marx Is the World’s Most Influential Scholar

How do you judge an academic? Can you compare scholars from different fields on equal footing? Whose work had the bigger impact down field, Albert Einstein or Ada Lovelace?

These seem like impossible questions to answer, but as reported by Nature, a team of information scientists out of Indiana University, Bloomington, think they’ve found a way. And, according to them, the most influential scholar is… Karl Marx.

Here’s how they got there:

Scientists are already regularly judged—by grant agencies, by tenure committees, by others—on their citation rate. But, some scientific disciplines are way bigger than others, which means it’s not really fair to compare theoretical physicists to, say, drug researchers, on citation count alone.

The Indiana University researchers, say Nature, tried to take this into account. First they looked to see if a scientist had not just one big study, but lots of work that was all cited regularly (rolled up in a measure called the h-index). Then, they compared the scientist’s score against others in their own respective field. This let them calculate how much of a stand-out they were.

Karl Marx’s score was “more than 22 times the average h-index of other scholars in history (but 11 times that of the average economist).”

Compared to 35,000 other high-profile scholars, Marx’s score stood out the most. Second in line was psychologist Sigmund Freud. Third was the (still alive and working) physicist Edward Witten.

Does this mean that Das Kapital is more important than string theory? Not necessarily, in the grand scheme of human existence. But on college campuses? Marx might be winning.

It's a stretch to call Marx a scholar. His grasp of history was poor and his grasp of individual motivation even poorer.

He was not lazy, and he was not wrong. He made a few bad predictions like anyone would but his underlying theory about Capitalism being hated by the masses isn't wrong. Look who Americans just re elected. And we're supposedly the most pro capitalism country out there.

Don't forget about Richard.
According to Wikipedia, he was the first solo artist to have his first seven singles hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

I hope your first sentence was facetious. In actual reality, Marx was a lazy loser so much that he mooched off of others to survive. He even turned on his fellow revolutionaries if he had to survive. One or more of his own children died of malnutrition, despite his having a decent middle class job as a university professor. Despite this, the great economist managed to drive himself and family into financial ruin. So he lived off Engels who lived off his own family's industrial wealth.

Sounds like a great example for today's Progressive Left.

Remember that Marx contributed a lot more than just his ultimately-wrong political views; he also revolutionized the way history was studied. Even historians who utterly reject Marxism have to acknowledge what is called the Marxian method of historiography, which encourages the historian to see the 'big picture' of how different social, cultural, military, and lots of other forces work together to create the historical narrative. That's why he's so often referenced by historians. His number one placing doesn't surprise me a bit.

I don't even know if Karl Marx is the most influential political scientist of the modern era.

I'd have to say it's John Rawls. "Theory of Justice" is essentially the backbone of the entire argument about the scope of government.

His work with the "veil of ignorance" alone informs virtually all public policy.

Take the article with a grain of salt. Here's an opposing view:

“I tend not to put a whole lot of weight on these numbers and I’ve never heard of the h-index,” says James Ihle, a biochemist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee — who at one stage placed fourth overall in the Scholarometer ranking. If you, as an evaluator, have to rely solely on corrected h-indices to compare academics, says Ihle, “then you’re dumb, and you don’t understand what you are doing”.

Well I'm just saying: there's no doubt that Marx is an extremely influential presence in academic thought.

But there's just no equal in our era for John Rawls. I won't go as far to say he's the father of modern political science, because I don't know the history of it enough to say. But there's no doubt his ideas are ever-present in nearly any issue we discuss on this forum.
