Nuclear option by Reid

I know why he is doing this but I cannot see this being good for democrats. Its as if he and Obama will watch the majority crash and burn as long as Obama gets his way till midterms. Or maybe they have the numbers that show the Rs will have House and Sennate after midterms and they only have a year to do all the damage they can.

Yeah but I don't know if I agree with this, even though I totally understand it.

This was just a matter of time. As the GOP correctly argued in 2005, the rule is out of date with modern politics. In the long run neither party gains from this, but the government will function better.

Democrats just aren't up to that level yet. Wait until all of our bills come due and the food stamps run out.

And thanks for your brilliant insight, this is OK since republicans probably would do it too.

The majority will be able to trample the minority opinion and the minority will have little or no input on those issues the majority decides to ram through. If thats better function ask yourself how a pure partisan vote and law turned out with ObamaCare. This is bad in the hands of either party.

Frankly, I see this as great news. The only party that could "get away" with breaking these rules was the Democrats, and now that the gates of hell are open, the conservatives on the right can drive a truck through it.

The Democrats were filibustering judicial nominees who were radical by almost any measure. Bush nominated one judge who said that liberalism is the path to slavery, for christ's sakes.

The Republicans are not raising hardly any objections to the vast majority of these nominees, on the other hand. They are just preventing the courts and administrative positions from getting filled, or using them to extort their 1,000,000th piece of non-incriminating non-evidence on Benghazi.

This will no doubt be the response by the GOP.

"We can't filibuster nominees anymore? FINE! Than you'll never get to filibuster anything!"

Very true.

I do worry about quorum rules, however. The primary reason the filibuster exists is to prevent what occasionally happens in states -- where a minority will simply flee the state and hole up in a neighboring state to prevent the vote from meeting quorum standards, thereby preventing the vote from occurring.

We don't exactly want to see a band of federal Congressional Republicans in a rowboat in international waters.

...right?

Senate approval by 60 votes for laws, treaties, and other actions remains a legitimate mechanism for ensuring minority rights to prevent tyranny of a majority. Senate approval by 60 votes for OPEN jobs has always been patently stupid; it has become precisely what we know it would be under such a system--a mechanism for the minority party to entrench themselves as petulant obstructionists. Period.

The difference is the first promotes a legitimate debate, even if it is frustrating at times, over substance and policy; the latter is merely a means of "taking your ball home" or throwing a temper tantrum, not aimed at substance or policy...but to prevent legitimate government business from being conducted.

The idea this is a "nuclear option" is histrionic hyperbole aimed at preserving obstructionist's "right" for throwing a temper tantrum over precisely WHO ought to be hired for certain jobs. It's just another example of politicians choosing to act as petulant and spoiled brats and refusing to be adults. SUrprise, surprise.

Pretty much.

There are something like 1,400 positions that require Senate approval now.

That's unworkable with a virtually-required supermajority on every one.

Hell, it's probably unworkable, period.

The filibuster can still be used on laws.

Reminds me of DC being washed away partly in the movie "Evan Almighty" with Steve Carell.
