Why are you a republican or democrat (or independent)?

Just our of curiousity.

Is it because that's how you were raised and strictly vote along the party lines no matter what? Are you an intelligent voter that pays attention to what's happening with this country?

I vote republican because they stand for family values, economy growth, small businesses growth which is essential for the economy, and they respect the protected right of religion and right to bear arms. I also believe in states rights over big government.

What do democrats vote democrat for? Free phones, free handouts, rights to kill babies, racism, big brother controlling every facet of your life? Please explain your intentions democrats?

Because the democratic party that was once respected is no longer the democratic party. Democrats from 50 years ago would be republican.

I'm a libertarian because I believe in the principles of non-aggression, free trade, and justice (not make-believe social justice, but actual justice where infringements are punished, and the scales are balanced).

When I turned 18, I registered as a Democrat because that's what my whole family is. Later, I registered Republican because that's what most of my friends were at the time. Then I went back to Democrat because the Republicans (read: Neo-cons) were a disaster. Now I'm about to re-register as an Independent because they are both such colossal screw-ups. My ideology has parts from both sides anyway, so that's probably where I belong anyway.

I've been a Republican my whole life. As a kid, my parents were, and we lived over seas during the cold war. Carter was the first President I remember, and the memories are not good. Reagan made us all feel good to be Americans, and again, in Europe during the Cold War, that was very important. I've morphed into quite the conservative, and I'm actually very frustrated with the Republican Party, but I refuse to leave it because I want to see it fixed. There may come a time when I'd leave and become an Independant, but for now, I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Independent.

I'd prefer to vote for the person I think would do the best job and not the party I think is most similar to my beliefs...

Barack Obama is the best thing that ever happened to the memory of Jimmy Carter.

I'm a libertarian nationalist conservative (since we like labels here) who tends to vote Republican because they support small government and pro-growth economic policies and because they are the more reliable party on national defense. The issues on which I disagree with Republicans, and there are quite a few, are less important to me than the economy and national defense.

Fiscal conservative and social liberal. My dad is a tree hugging hippie and my mother is a voracious power hungry yuppie. I blame them. I tend to think help should only come locally. Family/friends/neighbors/community/city/state. But I also tend to think those same 5 groups should be able to do pretty much whatever they want barring the harm of others.

I'm Anti-Democrat and anti-progressive Republican ie: RINO.They're like termites eating away at the foundation of this country. They infect Capitalism and the Free Market with socialist regulations and laws that cripple Capitalism and then blame Conservatives for it(ie: see Barney Frank and urban renewal).
If this country isn't tented and all termites killed off really soon, we're done.

I have been a republican my entire life, mostly due to protection of the second amendment. I despise liberals/democrats/progressives or whatever they call themselves, and truly believe that they are responsible for the demise of this country. Over the last decade I have found that the Republican Party does not have my beliefs. I am a limited government conservative libertarian if I had to label myself. The Republican Party has lost me with their last two presidential candidates, I will not vote for a RINO anymore and would rather throw my vote away to support a less established candidate that has more of my beliefs.

I am a moderate leaning Republican -- I am a catholic who leans liberal on moral issues, and leans conservative on economic issues. I usually vote Republican and I've been outspoken about not liking where the party is today, nor where it is going. Today, I don't like the focus on tying one religion to social policy and not caring about spending. In tomorrow's party, I would like to see the party push for fiscal reform through collaboration instead of stubbornly clinging to principle. I prefer private sector vs. the public sector, but can't understand the relentless defense of the 1%. I prefer the government not over-spend and not waste money on inefficiency, but can't understand complete resistance to any government involvement -- smart government can contribute to growth. I prefer the government not hand-hold every single citizen in America and identify those gaming the system, but also get frustrated with the right's insensitivity to the welfare of those who struggle to support themselves.

I normally vote Republican because I despise liberals with every fiber of my being. I know voting for the GOP is largely a waste of time but I do know it infuriates liberals and that makes it all worth it. There's the added bonus that it does somewhat prevent liberalism from being implemented in policy.

I grew up a Democrat and when in college, 'er art school, became more liberal. Once out it evolved politically over to the conservative Republican side, based on business experience, working and handling money and bills.

From there, I rubbed shoulders with conservatives who introduced me to ideas I never knew before but aligned with my experience and made more sense. But it was the philosophical idea of limited govt, especially federal govt that appealed to me. I was also anti-communist as well as anti-socialist.

I'd say since 2003, due to what the Republicans have been doing, I've seen they don't really practice what they preach--'er I should say the leadership. Due to the Iraq war, which I instinctively opposed as BS, I began to research who promoted wars and more about war in general---along the lines of certain interests being behind them, the use of rhetoric and false reporting as in truth being the first casualty of war. If I hadn't started reading more paleo-libertarian and paleo-conservative literature I woulda' never known how dirty govts are. Even our own. Or should I say how certain interests hold it captive for their own ends.

This lead me to finding out that the Republican party historically has usually been for big government. It's just the latest incarnation of the falsely-labeled Federalist-Whig party which re-emerged under Lincoln. The democrats used to be the party of state rights, low taxes, free trade and a more limited federal govt. The Marxist-leaning Progressives hijacked it but let's not forget that TR was a Progressive too.

So I went from democrat, to liberal democrat, to moderately conservative, to conservative, to paleo-conservative then added a libertarian streak. I am unable to go full libertarian because I do believe some order is necessary including on social issues but at the local level. So it's just too little govt....it's mini-anarchy. Besides it's tough to have such a model with a welfare state as we have to pay for other people's lifestyle choices if they lead to bad results.

I think this shows I can learn and change my ideas if a good persuasive argument is made and I have all the material facts, often omitted when educated as a liberal.
