Question.

I had a very interesting discussion last night based off what the Pope said in his new paper, and I want to pose a hypothetical:

If you could end poverty in America right now for every single person in our country, with the push of a button, by capping the most a person could make at $100 million, would you do it?

I haven't done the math on that, but assume for the sake of the exercise that the math would work.

Also for the purposes of this exercise, assume this is feasible to accomplish. It's a magic button. I know the popular rebuttal will be "if we did that, billionaires would go elsewhere" -- however ask yourself if would you push the button if you were guaranteed that they wouldn't?

Why, or why not?

No. The reason for that is because by doing so you are rewarding some for being lazy. If I could truly help those who are poor due to bad circumstances then yes, but many people that are poor are that way due to a lack of drive to succeed. I would not want them to benefit for that on the backs of those who worked hard to achieve what they did.

Question:

If you could cap out Direckshun's threads at 100 per year, and it meant many, many hours of drivel could be eliminated, would you do it?

I fail to see how simply elevating somebody out of poverty is any kind of substantial "reward." We're talking about feeding people, clothing people, giving them medicine, and putting a roof over their head. You know: getting them out of poverty. That's something so abhorrent that we can't allow any billionaires to be reduced to $100 millionaires?

Do you believe that poverty must remain, in order to scare people into working?

Very few people pull down $100M in a year (I'd wager less than 5 in any given year). It would be a pointless law. Most of the big successful hedgies pull down between $15-45M a year.

It's easy to blame poor people for being poor because they're lazy but that's not the reality of poverty in the US.

Again, for the sake of this exercise, the math works.

If you need to mentally adjust it to $10m to make it more feasible in your imagination, go for it.

I see what agenda you are trying to push as this concept is not new. It does not work. There are those who truly struggle, and for them we should try to help, but to think every poor person is poor because of crap luck is garbage at best. Some folks are poor because they do not want to work. How does elevating them out of poverty benefit society when they still produce nothing nor so they have the desire to.

Stupid idea? You need to flesh out why.

Earnings caps are a bad idea IMO. A sensible tax policy would go a lot further without creating massive incentives to cheat the system.
