An interesting hole in evolutionary theory (as we understand it)

I came across this in my travels tonight, and thought it might make for an eye-brow raiser...

The long and short of it - some researchers decided to reverse apply Moore's Law to human biology. Using their Moore's Law-based computations, they first applied it to modern computers, and came up with the right answer - that microchips showed up right around the 1960's.

They then took the same computations and applied it to biological complexity (which, of course, humans are the pinnacle of as we know it). The results suggest that life began 5 billion years before the Earth even existed...

What it really means, who knows... The researchers who ran the computations refused to call it a theory and instead label it a "thought excersize" (the cowards!). In any case, it's pretty damned interesting.

The article can be read here:

It's funny you say that. On Through the Wormhole, they were talking about how it's a natural reaction for humans to invoke the will or actions of God into things they do not understand.

They also talked to a devout atheist who, shortly after his mother dieing, saw a wind chime sounding on a calm night that she loved and thought 'maybe it a sign.' He shook his head knowing there's a more logical explanation for why wind chimes make noise. Thinking there is more is a powerful, common coping mechanism.

I can appreciate the need for a coping mechanism in situations that the mind needs help to handle. I just took a course in evolutionary psychology (which did wonders for my ability to score via facebook but nothing else) and it studied evolved psychological mechanisms extensively; however, do you feel that the necessity of the existence of God is an evolved psychological mechanism.

Short answer, I dunno. Off the cuff answer, It hasn't hurt as non believers have had a rough go of it in history... well believers of the wrong God have had a rough time also. I simply don't know enough about it. I've never taken a psych course of a college level Bio course.

It's weird, I fear studying psych would make me feel about the mind the way the religious feel when they confront natural science. It attempts to, make the infinite into a bunch of rational prediction. But I don't want to be predictable, I want to be special.

That's the beauty of psychology. There's no absolute right nor absolute wrong. There's percentage tendencies, room for discrepancies (the alpha level is at 5 percent which is significantly greater than science based courses) and it's all virtually abstract. There is no definitive predictor of you, just a statistical analysis with a sizable margin for error that states a situation you may be in may have a significant outcome if input A and B were in place. Therefore giving you the opportunity to better your odds by giving you a chance to eliminate A & B from the equation.

It's fascinating to me. I love what I've learned and look forward after next semester's graduation to learn more extensively in a Masters program.

You are going into a psychological field? What direction?

I am not 100% certain but am leaning towards a clinical therapy. In the midst of this month long break until the next semester starts I am going to evaluate everything and make a definitive decision.

Same story for god. If he exists when did he begin?

Sagan said it best:

"If God created the universe, we must then ask the next logical question: what created God? We might say God came from nothing, or that God always existed. If we say that God came from nothing, why not skip a step and say the universe came from nothing? If we say that God always existed, why not skip a step and say the universe always existed?"

And if you can't explain, that means God did it.

Got it.

I can't explain why my car keys were in my right pocket last night, since I usually keep them in my left pocket.

God did it.

How about if we teach the scientific theories in science class and we teach the religious beliefs in church?
