Probably the first, last and only rap song that even matters:

Rapper's Delight.

Rap was best in the very early days when it had disco roots. So many classic lines in that first one: Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn.....

Rapper's Delight was widely credited with introducing the term "hip hop" to modern music, because of the prominent lyrics right in the song. And it had an actual beat that anyone could dance to.

Again, really no need to listen to a rap song after this one, with an honorable mention to Blondie's Rapture of course.

Nas is pretty amazing.

Note that none of those 4 are heavily in my rap musical rotation (except Black Star from Kweli and Mos Def, which I still play probably once a month or more).
Finally, five pages in Talib and Mos Def get a mention. Talib really has no equal lyrically. Mos is right there with him too. For me, blackstar is one of the greatest hip hop albums ever, and can be argued the GOAT.

I think B.I.G was a better storyteller than 2Pac. Actually, I think Biggie was a better MC all around than Pac; Pac had a message though so when comparing them I always see them as equal.

If you've never listened to ****as Bleed and I Got A Story to Tell by Biggie you should do so.

Jay Z is definitely the best rap business mogul but Eminem actually shits on him in album sales.
