Man, I hope I was the first one to bring this insightful and fresh perspective to this thread.

I'm practicing becoming a 50 year old white dude. Only 23 years to go.

Maybe not the greatest, but he's certainly in the top 5. Not only did he break into a scene when there were literally no mainstream white rappers of note, and hadn't been since Vanilla (if you don't count Everlast), but he completely changed the game. His style was unique at the time, and his lyrical structure is now so widely used it's commonplace. Guys like Kanye West, Lil' Wayne, T.I., 50 Cent, The Game, Kendrick Lamar, and Kid Cudi all borrow heavily from Eminem's style.

Like I said, I'll give you that he may not be the greatest...but he's tops on a lot of reputable lists, and I don't think you give him enough credit.

My list would be:

7: Chuck D
6: KRS-One
5: Nas
4: Eminem
3: Rakim
2: Biggie
1: Tupac

Yes, but you can't ignore the garbage albums that both of them have put out too.

The New Danger and Black Magic were pure bullshit.

But I agree on Blackstar.

I think they are about equal. Pac was able to convey much more of his emotion (to his audience) through his music than Biggie which is why I think that meme still sticks around.

Also, there is no absolute best. Different MCs are best at different things.

Also, boo for no mentions of Ras Kass or GZA in the thread either.
