What Would RealisticallyHappen If a Nuke Was Detonated?

Ok, so serious question to get your opinions.

What would happen, in your opinion, if a country detonated a nuke against another country? I’m sure it might depend on who’s involved, but let’s say Iran drops one on Israel; Pakistan, or India etc.

Or, if somehow a small one was detonated by terrorists inside our own country, Canada, or the UK?

What would the fallout (see what I did there) be?

Read the following:

Fallout by Paul Boyer
Dr. Strangelove's America (I forget the author and am too damned lazy to go walk into my office and grab it).

Also, if you are interested in how nuclear weapons are manufactured, there are several texts available at most libraries that could help you. The DOE used to publish a comprehensive list of what was made, where, and by whom.

At Work in the Fields of the Bomb by Robert Del Tredici is a photo essay that (mainly) looks at the impact of nuclear weapons production

If you are concerned about the effects of various types of detonations, Glasstone's The Effects of Nuclear Weapons is still a standard-bearer.

If you are from Missouri and are morbidly curious, there is a rare, but available book called Missouri at Ground Zero that looks at what would have happened in a full exchange with the Soviets when there were still Minutemen around Whiteman.

If you're really curious, you could also try to get a tour of the Kansas City Plant. Formerly run by Bendix, then Honeywell, the KCP was the area that produced all of the non-weaponized parts of the bomb.

Essentially, it doesn't matter, atom bomb, neutron bomb... if multiple countries start unleashing them it spells the end of the current order of things... its caveman time after that.

A bombs give a huge blast and a heavy dose of radiation sickness.

Neutron bombs limit the the blast and infrastructure damage, but megamize the the radiation fallout/sickness on the given population... there will be NO winners in any scenario.

The US and Russia have bombs so big, it wouldn't be any problem to completely wipe out everything we both have... billions of lives lost... only the elite in government bunkers with artificially lit greenhouses and high tech water purifiers would be remotely safe.

Nukes today dwarf what we dropped in Japan.

This would destroy the impact area life, building everything. 1-3 miles out windows, light structures would be damaged. People in this area would be burned, but still die within a few hours due to radiation sickness. The area would be poluted with gamma radiation for decades. Shorter lifes, higher cancer rates, children born face an higher chance of problems and a higher mortality rate.

I watched the Day After last. A bit corny just given that it's dated, but it was still a cool movie and spooky. I can't imagine that shit being shown on the networks in '83 lol.

The Cold War was a lot more fun and clear as an attack pilot back in the day. We had to keep a percentage of us nuclear drop certified but I always found nukes very unchivalrous.

You also have to factor in the EMP issues. Wipe out electronics and then what do we have?

You more than likely will not see a Tsar Bomba being deployed as a weapon of war. Most old school cold war nukes were extremely large in size due to an inability to target accurately. The prevailing thought was since they couldn't get close then build it bigger and the target will fall within the blast range.

Now the Nukes are of a smaller size and can be placed on a platform so as to have multiple warheads.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multipl...eentry_vehicle

The Peacekeeper re-entry picture looks awesome and deadly at the same time.

As far as say 1 rogue type weapon I would think it would depend on how big and where. Say it is the US for this argument. From there it would depend on who is in the White House and Public Opinion. If you have a War Hawk in office they might more quickly pull a retaliatory nuke strike on an offending country. Probably a 1 to 1 ratio. Where as if you have a more "Olive Branch" type President they might be a little more inclined to send in special forces or conventional strike the manufacturing target.

What I think would be more scary and I am unsure why some 3rd world terrorist cabal hasn't done this yet is to shoot a nuke into orbit and detonate it over the US. The EMP blast would fry almost everything and there would be mass Chaos. Unless the thought is our Anti-Ballistic missile system could stop it before it detonated.

That is a capability that very few countries even have. How would a terrorist group get their hands on a ICBM?
