Question for conservatives on this forum

Do you like the new pope?

And/or

What do you think of the new pope?

I would go into Pitt Gorilla's thread and look, but this is an easier way to satisfy my curiosity in answer to the question.

I think he's great. He could end up saving modern Catholicism.

I don't qualify as a typical "conservative" but I like the pope. But remember it is hard to judge a pope in general but even harder to judge one who is brand new.

The funny thing about pope's is how the media portray them. The ACTUAL differences in beliefs between this pope and the last two is infinitesimally small. The media will instead latch on to a particular pope's "style" and extrapolate a bunch of nonsense from there.

So back to my original point... it is almost impossible to "judge" a pope from this distance and through our filtered media.

He's a guy, who is apparently in charge of a religion of which I am not a member.
A lot of people are projecting some hopes on him that may or may not be bourne out in the long run.

What do I think of him? . . . Mostly, . . . I don't. But since you seemed to be seeking the temperature of 'conservatives' I felt constrained to weight in [ego and all that].

I like him. When we were in Rome last summer it was really obvious that many Catholics were very positive toward him and his more simple style compared the last Pope. He will challenge the church no doubt.

The Pope seems to be trying to win votes from "the other party". I've seen politicians do this. They "reach out" to the other dude's voters by attacking their own base and attacking the virtues/belief system of people who have consistently voted for them.

In the end the politician ends up getting no real converts from the other side, but does lose some of his own natural base. Food for thought Mr Pontiff.

I'm not a Catholic, but I am a Christian who appreciates both the historical and political relevancy of the institution of the papacy.

I personally think the pope is a wonderful man and find him to be very inspirational. I was rather ambivalent about the two previous popes, but I find Francis to be an exciting human being. I'm constantly in a state of being interested in seeing what he does next.

Couldn't care less about the Pope. He just shouldn't pontificate about things he knows little about. Which is pretty much everything except his mysticism of choice.

You clearly know little of the Jesuits with this opinion. They are highly educated across broad spectrums of knowledge. We should all be so educated.

This is true...but they've also been heavily involved in communist movements too. Castro was one, or at least trained by one. They at least lean left. They've really changed. There is a famous former Jesuit who left the order for these reasons.

I'm not Catholic, very Protestant (Reformed tradition).

I don't care about him. The media loves him because he's saying things the left can latch on to, but I think (a) they aren't reading the full context of what he's saying, and he's not the liberal pope they are hoping, and (b) the Catholic church is largely becoming irrelevant in the first world today and I think it lacks a lot of political influence anymore. The papacy is probably less influential on the world stage today than it has ever been in history.
