Should Congress extend Unemployment Benefits?

Already 26 months.

In some states, was 72 months.

Where and when do we drawn the line? Or do we?

Poll to follow:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/1...n_4509686.html

ONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama has told two senators proposing to extend expiring federal unemployment benefits that he plans to push Congress to do it quickly.

More than 1 million Americans will lose benefits Saturday because Congress didn't extend them. Republican Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island have proposed extending the benefits for three months.

Obama called the two senators separately on Friday. The White House says Obama offered his support for their proposal and called it an urgent economic priority. Obama says the abrupt cut-off in cash assistance during the holidays will hurt economic growth and jobs.

Obama economic adviser Gene Sperling says the Senate will hold a vote on the proposal as soon as Congress returns next month.

You paid 72 months worth of unemployment benefits? That is a ton of taxes you have paid. I do agree that people have paid into it, but not that many months worth.

Unemployment is an insurance and not a tax.

So how does one pay into this insurance? I have collected many a paycheck and I never saw that appear on my check stub.

Why don't we need to extend them? I keep hearing from Boehner and Rush and Hannity how terrible the economy is.

This type of ignorance is why we're even having this debate.

Ah, no. It's most certainly a tax on employers. A tax they subsequently pass on to their employees via a reduction of comp.

To answer folks, employees don't pay for unemployment insurance. Employers are charged for it. During the depths of the recession, we also had to pay surcharges because so many people were getting laid off that it was depleting the fund. So in the worst of times for companies, they faced a tax increase. It stank.

A friend of mine ran a major unemployment office, and she said that, once on unemployment, people will generally exhaust it before they get serious about their job search. She was adamantly against extending unemployment benefits because she saw firsthand (her statement, not mine) that it was a disincentive for people to seek employment aggressively.

Ah. I suppose you could call it a tax on the employer, however, it is no more a cost passed on than any business expense.
