Should Congress extend Unemployment Benefits?

Already 26 months.

In some states, was 72 months.

Where and when do we drawn the line? Or do we?

Poll to follow:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/1...n_4509686.html

ONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama has told two senators proposing to extend expiring federal unemployment benefits that he plans to push Congress to do it quickly.

More than 1 million Americans will lose benefits Saturday because Congress didn't extend them. Republican Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island have proposed extending the benefits for three months.

Obama called the two senators separately on Friday. The White House says Obama offered his support for their proposal and called it an urgent economic priority. Obama says the abrupt cut-off in cash assistance during the holidays will hurt economic growth and jobs.

Obama economic adviser Gene Sperling says the Senate will hold a vote on the proposal as soon as Congress returns next month.

I though Loneiguana was the only person on this board who really believes businesses just eat costs of government imposed programs.

You could tweak it by allowing folks to work part time and not lose their benefits. The current system deducts any pay from the benefit amount which of course discourages any form of work. Unemployed people need to keep their skills (and work ethic) up and letting them temp or take low paying jobs might help. Many folks see temp jobs turn permanent anyway so employers get a payback by having readily willing workers available for an audition.

In addition you could simply use extended benefits - past the standard six months - as a "loan" type system where some amount of extra time benefits are paid back into the system upon successful re-entry into the job market (garnishment)

And since your employer is paying it, and not you, that makes it OK?

The state of WI has charged us numerous times for additional surcharges to collect funds as the pools are depleted.

I pass those costs on to my customers. Sooooo.....the general public is supporting their lifestyle.

I have had people quit, get unemployment, and then ride it out till they have to go back to work.

EVERY TIME we are presented with a claim for unemployment, we fight it.

It's no accident the number of Americans on UE and food stamps has skyrocketed with the job market collapse. It proves the vast majority aren't choosing that life voluntarily and would prefer to work like they once did

A friend of mine ran a major unemployment office, and she said that, once on unemployment, people will generally exhaust it before they get serious about their job search. She was adamantly against extending unemployment benefits because she saw firsthand (her statement, not mine) that it was a disincentive for people to seek employment aggressively.
Business owners such as yourself have a very legitimate gripe, and plenty of skin in the game. Everyone else is just a bunch of whiny bitches complaining because they have to get off their own ass for the money they receive.

Pretty normal for this forum. Everyone looking on everyone else's plate yet proclaiming self preservation, and self reliance.

We need more handouts for the unemployed.

Force people to to have them live in our homes. People who can afford homes are evil and rich.

Which is why I ask. Instead of actually answering the question like J Diddy did you have to post the drivel you just did. This explains why you are ridiculed in every thread you post in and no one takes you seriously.
