*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Of course, substitute protein shakes for two meals and have 6 meals per day and only average 1100 calories.

My bloodwork disagrees. I had a physical while I was doing it to prove that it doesn't deprive you of anything.

Multivitamin, fish oil, and lots of lean protein. 1 meal. No protein shakes. Just 1 meal.

It probably doesn't really matter if you eat once a day or 10 times a day as long as you're getting the right amount of calories.

The only thing about eating once a day that comes to mind for me is that it seems like it would be REALLY hard to do for someone who was trying to control their calories, at least at first.

While nutrients are important, I find those who are overweight really put way too much emphasis in meeting some magical nutrient number someone has told them about. It's pretty simple. Eat relatively healthy meals and not a lot. If you aren't hungry, don't eat. If you are hungry but just ate, fight through it. The body can be hungry and is normal and this has to happen to lose weight. You won't lose weight feeling full all the time. People think "starving" your body few a few hours is bad. It simply isn't. The talk about needing to eat all these small meals during the day is a huge myth.

Your stomach shrinks, and then there is only so much you can eat at once. And then you go to sleep, so there's no more time to eat.

I wasn't eating healthy when I was fat either. But the body needs nutrients. I didn't eat red meat for weeks, and Igot lightheaded a lot. Incorporated some red meat back into my diet, and I haven't had any problems.

If you don't eat, where do you get your energy? All powders and such? I don't mean to sound like an expert. I'm not. But not eating just doesn't make sense to me. That's all.

Define nutrients. What do you mean by this? Which nutrients, specifically?

I'm not asking you to patronize you or anything. I'm just asking so that you will think about it a little more carefully.

If you are over 5% bodyfat (for men, 8% for women), you get it from fat. Under that, and your body eats its own muscle tissue. But under 5% is nearly impossible to maintain for any significant length of time without dying.

One day very soon, I will no longer be overweight, and then maybe people will stop telling me that's why I don't know what I'm talking about.

Of course, but in the interim would you not be hungry all the time?

That's what I'm talking about. For someone who is trying to lose weight, it seems this type of eating would be completely unmanageable.

Search through last year's thread if you want a lot more details. I had an 8 week daily post about it.

But basically it was 1200 calories of all protein, no more than 20g of fat per day, less than 20g carbs per day.

You get used to it. Just because you're hungry doesn't mean you have to eat. Also, there are appetite suppressants you can use to get you through it, like ephedrine and caffeine and phenylephrine.

I always thought of nutrients as vitamins, minerals, protein, carbs, and fat.

Yes, but only 2 of those are primary energy sources.

And there's no reason you can't get all of what you require in one meal.

Hell, a Chipotle burrito is damn near 1800 calories when you load it up, and lots of people eat one of those for just one meal.

I average 180 grams of protein, 20 grams of carbs, 25 grams of fat, 80 oz of water, and 1100 calories per day. But I eat six small meals in the process. Am I wrong for doing this?
