Priest's position on age of the universe

Interesting talk, I kinda like this guy. Given the bizarre debates here in DC on the age of things I thought it would be interesting to see a middle of the road approach.

Coyne kicks ass. I frequently use him as an example to people who claim that Catholics are anti-science or believe the Earth is X thousand years old or that Catholics don't believe in evolution.. or any number of nonsensical things that are said.

The Fathers James Weisheipl, OP; and William Wallace, OP are even better! Both were eminent philosophers of nature and science!

Finally.

I am about the first person that kids hear that say the earth was not made in seven days.

So I have to tread lightly. Can't talk to some about evolution, can't talk to some about God.

Rock me hard place.

He is admitting the universe is 14 b y old. And life could not happen in a young universe.

religion and science DO NOT have to be opposites.

very refreshing

He has taken a ton of blowback from hardliners over the years but to the RCC's credit they didn't boot him.

We still have to deal with this and as such there is little room to not be diligent with respect to the Catholic Church as well as protestants.

Hmmmm hadn't seen he had been sacked. Well I retract my statement. Then again Benedict was a child molester after the fact and so bad he was booted himself.

I hate them so much I posted a thread and a video about one and his views with praise and without any criticism. Other than that you are spot on.

Quite a bit, actually (not really, but it sounds good).

I used to be a Benedictine Monk (I'll will ALWAYS root for Benectine College over Rockhust too). In all honesty when it comes to doing philosophy within the Catholic tradition, in harmony with the philosophical principles set forth by St. Thomas Aquinas (who was also a Dominican), and that respects science the Dominicans are hands down ahead of the field among religious orders--only lay people have done better work (DeKoninck and Maritain come to mind). Wallace's The Modeling of Nature is a masterful work explaining how science, philosophy, and theology work together...but it is not an easy read.
