Sweet Satan statue for Oklahoma

At first I was excited because I thought this was the goat-headed demon that Chris said was me. Turns out it is not Azazel, but my rival Baphomet.

Group unveils Satan statue design for Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A satanic group unveiled designs Monday for a 7-foot-tall statue of Satan it wants to put at the Oklahoma state Capitol, where a Ten Commandments monument was placed in 2012.

The New York-based Satanic Temple formally submitted its application to a panel that oversees the Capitol grounds, including an artist's rendering that depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns, wings and a long beard that's often used as a symbol of the occult. In the rendering, Satan is sitting in a pentagram-adorned throne with smiling children next to him.

"The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond," temple spokesman Lucien Greaves said in a statement. "The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation."

The Satanic Temple maintains that the Oklahoma Legislature's decision to authorize a privately funded Ten Commandments monument at the Capitol opened the door for its statue. The Ten Commandments monument was placed on the north steps of the building in 2012, and the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has sued to have it removed.

Similar requests for monuments have been made by a Hindu leader in Nevada, an animal rights group and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

In response, the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission recently placed a moratorium on considering any new requests.

"Anybody can still make their request, but we'll hold off on considering them until the lawsuit is adjudicated," commission Chairman Trait Thompson said.

The push by the Satanic Temple has rankled elected leaders in this conservative state known as the buckle of the Bible Belt, who say such a proposal would never be approved by the commission.

"I think you've got to remember where you are. This is Oklahoma, the middle of the heartland," said Rep. Don Armes, R-Faxon. "I think we need to be tolerant of people who think different than us, but this is Oklahoma, and that's not going to fly here."

While Greaves acknowledges the Satanic Temple's effort is in part to highlight what it says is hypocrisy of state leaders in Oklahoma, he says the group is serious about having a monument placed there.

The group already has raised nearly half of the $20,000 it says it needs to build the monument.

"We plan on moving forward one way or another," Greaves said.

Another Oklahoma legislator, Rep. Earl Sears, called the group's effort "an insult to the good people of the state."

"I do not see Satanism as a religion, and they have no place at the state Capitol," said Sears, R-Bartlesville.

On its website, the Satanic Temple explains that it "seeks to separate Religion from Superstition by acknowledging religious belief as a metaphorical framework with which we construct a narrative context for our goals and works.

"Satan stands as the ultimate icon for the selfless revolt against tyranny, free & rational inquiry, and the responsible pursuit of happiness," the website says

I have seen an amusing trend over the last few years. Here in the DC forum and on social media sites. People trying to validate mixing Church and State by quoting the DOI instead of the USCON. It's like throwing up a white flag, and these Oklahomans actually inserted it into a bill.

The state of Florida thinks this is a crazy story.

We could probably dig up how it ended up since these articles are 13 years old.

Good luck, I just Googled it and wasn’t finding much other than her story was turned into a made for tv movie called “Not like Everyone Else” that aired in 2006. In that show all charges against the school district were dismissed and her family was ordered to pay court costs of $6000.

Sorry for the confusion I caused. I should have marked the dates of the article more clearly.

Student accused of practicing witchcraft loses lawsuit
By The Associated Press

TULSA, Okla. — A high school student has lost her lawsuit that claimed she was suspended because of her interest in the Wicca religion.
Brandi Blackbear, a senior-to-be at Union Intermediate High School, filed her federal lawsuit in October 2000.

An July 18 order by U.S. District Judge Claire Eagan said neither of Blackbear's two suspensions in 1999 violated her constitutional rights.
Eagan said Blackbear testified during a deposition that she is not, has never been and has never wanted to be a Wiccan. The judge also said Blackbear admitted that the defendants have not done anything to keep her from practicing any religion.

"In view of this testimony, the court finds that Brandi does not hold a sincere belief in the religion of Wicca," Eagan wrote in the order.
Union Public Schools attorney Doug Mann called the lawsuit "absolutely ridiculous."

District Superintendent Cathy Burden said the case became an "international media event" that put Union in an unfair light. The "frivolous lawsuit," she said, cost the district more than $100,000 in legal fees.

Eagan's order also said Blackbear has admitted that religion played no role in the decision to discipline her in December 1999.

Blackbear's attorney John M. Butler said he thinks the order may not be "exactly correct" on those points and said his client's purported statements may have been "taken out of context."

The judge wrote that Blackbear stated in a "self-serving" affidavit that she stopped studying Wicca as a result of allegations supposedly made by a school official.

The order indicates that Blackbear received a five-day out-of-school and 10-day in-school suspension for "disrupting the educational process."
Specifically, two of Blackbear's classmates had alleged they were "fearful" because she allegedly was claiming to be a witch and to possess the power to harm people by casting spells on them, the order states.

Burden said July 18 that the suspension had nothing to do with religion and everything to do with Blackbear's "terrorizing" students.

She said the whole "religious freedom" allegation appeared to be a ploy to make the lawsuit more exciting to the media.

The order states that Blackbear also was suspended in late April 1999 for 19 days for making threats against students.

Butler said an appeal is probable and expressed optimism that Blackbear will prevail at that level.

Burden said Blackbear is now a "successful student in our district."

If they didn't have that 10 Commandments monument, I don't think you would see this group doing this there. It's not merely a thumb in the eye just to cause trouble, I think they are making a point--if you're going to open the door for religious displays, be ready to accept this one too.

What has this country come to when you can’t threaten fellow students with a black magic curse?

Apparently you can if you hold a sincere belief in witchcraft.

Having beliefs that are not mainstream enough got Chris railroaded out of CP.

Maybe they are trying to prove some deeply felt point, but personally, I doubt it.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out either way.
