Outlook dims for jobless benefits

The free ride might end to get off your rear and get a job, no worries though apply for welfare, food stamps and section 8 housing on the tax payers dime.

Outlook dims for jobless benefits

Urgent bipartisan negotiations in the Senate to extend emergency unemployment benefits blew up on Thursday, placing the future of the jobless aid in doubt.

Republicans and Democrats appear to be at an impasse over how long to extend the benefits and how to pay for the continuation. The shrewd and cagy Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) further stoked the GOP’s anger by preventing Republicans from proposing amendments to legislation.

Senate Republicans are highly skeptical of a Democratic proposal to pay for a revival of the benefits through November by extending the sequester’s mandatory savings for one year, through 2024.

“I will blackmail the Republicans if that's what it take to get this pass,” Reid said on Thursday afternoon. “I have been waiting here for more than 24 hours for a reasonable proposal by my Republican friends to pay for this. We don’t have one yet.”

Republicans beg to differ and said they have endorsed a number of proposals that could raise billions of dollars by cracking down on income tax fraud and duplicative benefits to pay for a three-month extension of unemployment aid, which is where Democrats started earlier this week. A number of Republicans support using a paid-for, three-month continuation of benefits as a bridge to reforming the program as part of a longer extension.

“When this was first presented it was a three-month emergency extension. Now all of a sudden we’ve morphed into a one-year.

Republicans also pointedly criticized a procedural move by the wily Reid on Thursday to prevent amendments from being filed to legislation reviving the benefits, arguing the incident is emblematic of a Senate in which they believe they are rarely, if ever, given the opportunity to get votes on Republican legislation.

“Is it the majority leader’s intent to allow votes on any Republican amendments? asked Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)

After a pause, Reid replied: “The answer to your question is no.”

He doesn't use any numbers. The stats are reported to him. That chart uses the same ones, but then uses some "author calculations" to concoct some alternate universe.

I didn't say "doctored," but one of the sources listed is "author's calculations." I don't really know what that means or what he calculated or how he did it.

Don't most charts require an author to do some calculations? Or use data that was generated by calculations? Would you have been happy had they left that off?

No.

Maybe, but you still just cite the source. I assume the Bureau of Labor Stats did some calculations, and when they published the data, they surely explained their methods.

I do give them some credit for noting "author calculations." But it does, or should, make the reader wonder what the author calculated.

It means that you can't crow about a reduction in the unemployment rate when the workforce is shrinking at a crazy pace.

BTW, retirement only accounts for a % of this.. another large chunk is from women staying home and younger adults staying in school longer... both are due to the lack of jobs. Oh and hell, retirement figures are also skewed by the fact that some workers are "retiring" because they have no choice. Something we wouldn't see as much of in a truly healthy recovery.

I just read an article on Yahoo about the "Real Unemployment" numbers and nearly fainted.

The mainstream media is finally starting to tell the truth on how many people are giving up on finding work.
