No Such Thing as a Free Lunch

Unless, of course, you're a congressman:

http://tinyurl.com/jwwkhj9

WASHINGTON -- Weeks after Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) made headlines for suggesting low-income students sweep cafeteria floors to learn there's "no such thing as free lunch," Savannah TV station WSAV 3 looked at the "free lunches" Kingston himself has received as a member of Congress.

There's no precise way to count the number of lunches Kingston has enjoyed on taxpayer dollars, but the station took a look at expense reports and disclosures to uncover staggering figures from the congressman's three years in office.

According to the station's investigation, Kingston and his staff have expensed $4,182 worth of "meals for business purposes," and recorded $4,289.33 in free meals from third-party interest groups, including the Congressional Institute and the Georgia Bankers Association.

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Kingston has traveled to four continents, racking up $24,313 in per diem allowances. While the allowances were allotted for more than just lunch money, midday meals were included.

When WSAV 3 asked Kingston whether he believes members of Congress "work hard," the congressman "defended his work ethic," saying he works 60 hours to 70 hours a week.

"That's what representative democracy is about, is members going to Washington, but coming home and answering the tough questions," Kingston told the station.

Beyond taxpayer dollars, Kingston has enjoyed many free meals on the campaign trail. WSAV 3 reported $145,391.26 in expensed meals and catering for campaign events, $26,066.45 of which was charged at the Republican Club of Capitol Hill, an exclusive, members only venue.

It doesn't have to be the worst possible scenario your imagination can conjure.
So it's voluntary in exchange for the free meal, but if the kid doesn't volunteer, he doesn't eat?

You guys seem to have become so used to the idea of a free lunch program that what should be considered generosity is instead taken for granted.

I'm not behind this idea. But instead of seeing it as the evil machinations of some cold hearted hater of children, I recognize that it's a different form of generosity based on a different idea of what might be the best way to help these kids grow to be good adult citizens. I can disagree without demonizing.

List of millionaire congressman

http://swampland.time.com/2014/01/09...ionaires-club/

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee who made his millions in the car alarm business, was the richest lawmaker in Congress with an average net worth of $464 million in 2012.

The least-wealthy member was Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.), who reported an average net worth of negative $12.1 million. Valadao is in the red, the Center found, due to loans for his family’s dairy farm.

Maybe that should have been its own thread

I thought you were going to agree to disagree. But since you can't restrain yourself, I'll let you know that I think as little of your class warfare mentality and your emotional response to this as you do of what I said (which isn't class warfare at all, by the way).

My comments aren't based on what I think is a winning political message. My comments are about cutting through the bullshit that you and so many others have bought into and analyzing this proposal on it's merits. I'm fully aware that there are armies of people out there who abandon rational thought when someone mentions "the kids". Get out of here with that demagoguery.

How can you even believe the things you've said if you're not railing on how sick our country is because we don't make free meals available 365 days a year? It's such a logically inconsistent position to say that school lunches must be free with no strings attached or we've failed as a society, but on weekends, find a good dumpster for lunch.

But if you want to, we can agree to disagree as I'm sure I'm not going to turn you around. And again, I'm personally against making this change because I agree that the benefit (in terms of life lessons learned) isn't as great as the downside (in terms of possible embarrassment and political susceptibility).

You have listed nothing that I didn't do growing up in fact that seems like normal everyday tasks. I also have earned my way. That still has nothing to do with the absolutely moronic idea of having poor kids sweep floors at school to earn their lunch for ****s sake. The entitlement mentality is a problem in our country. Solutions are needed and this is not one of them~

Well, patteeu, you certainly got hot quickly... I'm just as sickened by your view as you seem to be of mine, same goes for HCF's quote above... neither one of you seem to be able to see the big picture at all.

Poor parents? **** you kid, we're going to further demean you in front of your peers, making you feel even less than you already are keenly aware of, all so you can a have a lunch that costs us about a buck to make.

Mega billionaire corporations? Hey you little turd, thats right... they get the breaks, they get a free lunch, wanna know why? Billions, thats why... now go get a plastic bag and get the cans outta that ditch.

We're talking about a SCHOOL LUNCH and some of you are acting like this is some kind of worthless bridge to nowhere boondoggle... YOU get the **** outta here with that garbage... "we dont have the money to feed our nations kids ONE meal in school" GOD FORBID some billionaires dont get quite as sterling of a break as they're used to so that our nations kids grow up strong and well educated.

This is pretty much the dividing line to me, want the kids to work for one decent meal a day?

KISS MY ASS
