No Such Thing as a Free Lunch

Unless, of course, you're a congressman:

http://tinyurl.com/jwwkhj9

WASHINGTON -- Weeks after Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) made headlines for suggesting low-income students sweep cafeteria floors to learn there's "no such thing as free lunch," Savannah TV station WSAV 3 looked at the "free lunches" Kingston himself has received as a member of Congress.

There's no precise way to count the number of lunches Kingston has enjoyed on taxpayer dollars, but the station took a look at expense reports and disclosures to uncover staggering figures from the congressman's three years in office.

According to the station's investigation, Kingston and his staff have expensed $4,182 worth of "meals for business purposes," and recorded $4,289.33 in free meals from third-party interest groups, including the Congressional Institute and the Georgia Bankers Association.

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Kingston has traveled to four continents, racking up $24,313 in per diem allowances. While the allowances were allotted for more than just lunch money, midday meals were included.

When WSAV 3 asked Kingston whether he believes members of Congress "work hard," the congressman "defended his work ethic," saying he works 60 hours to 70 hours a week.

"That's what representative democracy is about, is members going to Washington, but coming home and answering the tough questions," Kingston told the station.

Beyond taxpayer dollars, Kingston has enjoyed many free meals on the campaign trail. WSAV 3 reported $145,391.26 in expensed meals and catering for campaign events, $26,066.45 of which was charged at the Republican Club of Capitol Hill, an exclusive, members only venue.

Nope it didn't. What does that have to do with making kids push a broom to earn their lunch. I seriously cannot understand the logic~

Fine, let the Goddamned ADULTS work their way out, if some of you guys cant see what this would do, how it would further stigmatize kids among their peers and make them even MORE prone to not giving a shit about any of it... then I'll just give up right now.

But lets atleast give their kids a CHANCE to better themselves by feeding their brains while they're at school, and if there is some altruism left over just for the sake of seeing to it that our nations kids get atleast one ****ing healthy meal while they're in school... then all the better.

The money is there over and over and over... the rich can stay rich, no problem... but if they, if WE... cant afford one damn good school meal, then **** this country, its not the America I love.

Why just hand these kids jobs simply for being poor? They can get out and earn their lunch like the rest of us.

Nah, he's dead on IMO.

Some of these guys would let the dollar and those who control it have their way with anything... "poor kids need to be taught how to work by God, their better off neighbor kids dont need that though, their parents have enough money to justify their existence".

Asking people to put forth a little effort to earn something is too much?

Not a kid IMO. If you want to teach them how to make a better way for themselves find another way than food.

What do you suggest for the kids who have money for lunch or is it just those stinking poor kids that need this lesson?

40 minutes and no response, as much as he's cracked me up in chick threads, I'd say he's an elitist butthole... "why the hell should wealthier kids have to learn the value of a dollar and hard work, their parents have it covered, let those worthless poor, workaday bastards earn a little something".

Anyone who wants a quick lesson in why this country is so divided should just read this thread, it should be a classroom project in schools around America... kinda like (toot toots own horn) my thread about the "Into The Wild" movie that made it into some Montana classroom.

The elitism, greediness and smug attitudes seep out of every pore with some people.

I understand that we have a growing population of people depending on government support. Entitlements is a problem. That said the lack of compassion in this thread is stunning. Those rotten poor kids need to learn!!!

Oh I totally agree, there is a HUGE segment of our population having kids like rabbits out there and its flat out garbage... but this "we cant afford to do this for a bunch of freeloader KIDS" spiel makes me want to puke.

It isnt about Socialism, its about common ****ing Decency and love of country.

I suggest they get a ****ing job too. It would serve them well but we have a generation of helicopter parents in that demographic that makes me want to beat those parents with a sock full of quarters.

The parents of these poor kids ****ing suck. I'm not suggesting it as punishment but FFS kids today don't have to earn shit. It's ****ing ridiculous.
