In financial matters, I tend to lean toward the liberal; I think in order to improve/repair our economy, history tells me we need to invest rather than cut back. I understand that this means we may have to raise taxes, which means both corporations and people (myself included) would lose money, which sucks.

Also, the vast majority of welfare recipients are not lazy hucksters living large on free government cheese, and yet entitlement programs are routinely demonized as free-money programs. The measure of a society is how well it takes care of those who need help, and to advocate shutting down entitlement programs to save a few bucks in taxes is borderline inhuman.

Also, the income gap isn't just liberal hype. The super-rich have somehow convinced an awful lot of non-super-rich that the secret to national prosperity is to cut more breaks to the super-rich, and until those convinced folks knock it off and agree to some equalization of the income levels, our increasing widening of the gap is absolutely going to end in either financial collapse, or violent revolution, or both.

With social issues, it's hard to lump them all under one umbrella. With gun control, my beliefs line up more with the liberals, although not as vehemently as they used to be, and with the acknowledgment that liberal gun control plans are often entirely stupid. With abortion, my beliefs line up so much with the conservatives that I actively avoid talking about it with my liberal family or friends, just for placidity's sake. I refuse, however, to classify myself as Pro-Gun, Pro-Gun-Control, Pro-Life, or Pro-Choice, because I'm thoroughly disgusted by all of those organizations.

I believe strongly in the separation of church and state, that gay rights are civil rights, and that civil rights are paramount. No teacher or regulation can raise a child better than the kid's own parents can, but the kid's own parents need to step up and take the responsibility; I also think that generally speaking, being raised in a loving, two-parent home is the best. Also, education is the key to everything, and we should make it available to everyone who seriously wants to pursue it, and nothing is dragging this country down more than anti-intellectualism and the denial of long-ago-proven scientific fact.

Foreign Policy isn't in the poll, but it's the area where I'm the most traditionally conservative. I think we should be more choosy about who are friends are and who they aren't. I'm anti-war in general, instead believing we should rely on our significant economic strength, but realize that war is necessary sometimes.

That's about it. It's not very easy to squash into a one-line summary.
We have something in common. Ill figure out what it is and get back to you.

Gawd that brings back memories of my first boss some decades ago. One day after hearing my views he said "you are way too young to be this conservative". I said, why? He said "son you're to the right of Attila Te Hun"

The poll should be "how do you think others view yourself?"

A) Lane: godless
B) Bowe: flaming liberal
C) Jay Cosmo: annoying

I think you should have added libertarian and authoritarian to the poll. The Republicans have ****ed up what "conservative" is accepted as meaning and the Democrats have done the same with "liberal."

Economics: I lean to the "conservative" side but I understand that we are part of a society and, therefore, will always have social programs. We will always have forms of socialism in our country and I think that's fine.

Social: I lean to the "liberal" side as I wish for our legal system to ensure as much individual freedom as possible within the mechanics of a functioning society. I do, however, also lean more to the "conservative" than the "progressive" side here as I view the USCON as the foundation of our country.

That's the problem with these labels. Your sensible statement that I bolded gets you labeled as 'worse than Hitler' by many people on here.

And the political parties keep pushing that divisiveness, and partisan voters eat it up. It's frustrating.

As for your earlier point about the meaning of "conservative", why do you think the GOP screwed it up? I assume you refer to the GOP not being for small government on every single issue. As if one slip up and BOOM! Whole thesis invalidated. No?

I think they wanted to keep their base but get away with doing things that paleoconservatives wouldn't approve of. So they invented "neoconservatives." It's the process that allowed both parties to merge into authoritarian platforms with differences minor enough (other than abortion and gun control) to keep partisan voters at each other's throats.

I would say that I align more with a Goldwater conservative mentality with a bit of a progressive streak. Which is fine. Goldwater himself said that the country needed both conservatives and progressives to push discussion and hammer out policies.

Republicans didn't invent the term "neoconservative". Liberals did. It's not that hard to learn this stuff in the internet age.
