Grandview Mayor Resigns

Heard this story this morning and thought it would be nice to have some discussion about local politics.

Anybody know anything else about what's going on in south KC?......

GRANDVIEW, Mo. - There are still plenty of questions about why the mayor of Grandview issued a sudden resignation on Friday.
But two city leaders confirmed to 41 Action News the FBI questioned them about former Mayor Steve Dennis’ involvement with a now defunct nonprofit.

According to documents filed online, two of Dennis’ former colleagues on the Grandview Board of Aldermen, Board President Brent Steeno and Alderman John Maloney, submitted complaints against him for falsely listing them as being on the board of directors for the organization “Matters of the Heart Inc.”

On April 1, 2013, Steeno and Maloney sent letters to the Missouri Secretary of State, asking for their names to be removed.
Just a year earlier, Dennis filed paperwork to create the nonprofit. A description said the purpose of the ministry was to be a local community outreach to the poor and disadvantaged.

“(He) never asked for my permission, agreement, or compliance to serve on the Board of Directors at any time,” both letters said. “I have not received any correspondences, written or verbal, about the operations, management, or direction of ‘Matters of the Heart, Inc.’”
Steeno, who will serve as interim mayor until Dennis’ old position is filled, told 41 Action News on Monday that he started getting questions about the nonprofit from people prior to the last April’s general election. Steeno said he didn’t know anything about it, but was then informed he was listed on the board of directors.

“I was pretty annoyed when I saw that,” he said. “You have a lot of thoughts that go through your mind. You wonder if someone is trying to do anything shady. To this day, I still have no idea.”

Maloney was also taken aback when he saw his name listed on the documents.

"I was shocked and angered," Maloney told 41 Action News.
Both city leaders said they asked the mayor about it, who told them it was an accident and the wrong paperwork had mistakenly been sent to the State.

But Steeno said the FBI questioned him about “Matters of the Heart, Inc.” about six months ago. Maloney also confirmed the FBI paid him a visit.

Despite that development, the mayor’s sudden resignation still came as a surprise to colleagues at City Hall, who also fielded questions from constituents about the sudden resignation.
"He did a great job for our city," Steeno said. "He was energetic. Citizens loved him. Staff loved him. We all had a great working relationship on the Board. It comes as a bit of a shock."
Dennis' nonprofit was administratively dissolved by the State of Missouri. According to public documents, the State of Missouri dissolved the nonprofit on December 19, 2012 for “failure to file a correct and current annual report.”
A spokeswoman with the FBI would neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation.
41 Action News tried to reach Dennis for comment with phone calls and a stop by his home, but is still awaiting a response.
Steeno and Maloney wanted to assure residents the situation with the former mayor is personal, and doesn't involve anything with the city.

Former Grandview mayor pleads guilty to $35K fraud scheme

The former mayor of Grandview plead guilty in court Tuesday to taking $35,000 intended for a charity and used it for personal expenses.

In city emails obtained through an open records request, KCTV5 News discovered former Grandview Mayor Steve Dennis writing about his need to resign and concerns about spending a year in prison.

Steve Dennis pleaded guilty to a federal wiretapping charge, which is a felony. He stole money from the International House of Prayer, a Grandview nonprofit.

Outside the courtroom, though, he said he "unequivocally" did not use any tax dollars for his own use.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys have worked out a deal where Steve Dennis will face one year and one day in prison in exchange for him giving up his right to appear before a grand jury. U.S. District Judge Howard Sachs will sentence him in the coming months.

Dennis admitted he set up fake charities and took $35,000 from International House of Prayer that he then used for his personal benefit, including paying for his family's living expenses.

He later sent a text to Milota.

"I doing everything I can to protect my family from the media onslaught. I will have a statement tomorrow. Thanks for your patience and understanding," Dennis wrote.

As he left the courthouse, he said "unequivocally" that he did not use any tax dollars for his own use. He asked for privacy, and declined to apologize to Grandview or IHOP. He said IHOP representatives have not sought the return of the money.

Email records obtained by KCTV5 had shown that Dennis had feared prison time before he resigned on Jan. 10.

Dennis admitted that from Dec. 12, 2011, to Nov. 29, 2013, he solicited donations for a corporation called Matters of the Heart. He said the nonprofit was federally tax exempt, but he never applied for the nonprofit status with the IRS even though an attorney had given him the needed instructions in December 2011.

The nonprofit, Matters of the Heart, had come under scrutiny by the Missouri Secretary of State's Office for paperwork issues, and two Grandview aldermen said they were listed as charity directors when in fact they were not. Matters of the Heart has since been dissolved.

In 2012, IHOP gave a check for $10,000 and then a check for $25,000 that Dennis used for himself and his family. The judge could order Dennis to pay restitution to International House of Prayer.

Dennis committed the wire fraud because he deposited the checks into his account. The check was written in Kansas and deposited in Missouri.

Interesting.

Grandview is a dying burg. I go through their main street for work sometimes. It just has the feel of a small struggling town you'd find close to the Iowa border to me.

I think Perkins is better.
Perkins/IHOP/Denny's.

Seems like Perkins dining rooms are normaly a little cleaner than IHOP.

St. Louis doesn't have Perkins, and the one in Grandview finally closed, and ironically the building is less than a block from IHOP HQ.

The IHOPs in St. Louis and Grandview are uniformly great, however. Also, IHOP renovated and enlarged all IHOPs more than 5yo in the past couple of years, at least in St. Louis.

Pro-Tip - the skillet scramble is still offered at IHOP, even though it's no longer on the menu.

Home fries, topped with peppers and onions, an over easy egg, and choice of sausage or bacon.

Delicious.

The thing I don't like about Perkins, IHOP, Denny's, Friendly's etc is you have to choose toast or pancakes. If you want pancake and toast you have to buy a side of toast. It irritates me. Without the toast I don't want eggs over easy, even though I'd rather have over-easy than scrambled. And I don't want to pay 1.50 or whatever for toast.

I still wonder if there is anything more to them than just wanting a lot of money. There is the church thing, but why would a church need to own homes?

Tax write offs? Put people up in them that work for them? Flip them for profit?
