GOP mulls 32 candidates for president in 2016--so far

GOP mulls 32 candidates for president in 2016--so far

By PAUL BEDARD | JANUARY 15, 2014 AT 5:25 PM
Washington Examiner

If you thought the 13-candidate clogged 2012 Republican presidential primaries were too crowded and confusing, then you might want to skip the 2016 process -- because the Republican Party is suggesting that 32 might be interested in running.

The Republican National Committee is operating a 2016 Presidential straw poll that lists all 32, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. It's all part of a fundraiser.

The poll asks users to pick their three top choices. No results are available yet. The list:

- Sen. Kelly Ayotte, of New Hampshire
- Haley Barbour, former Mississippi governor
- John Bolton, former ambassador to the United Nations
- Jeb Bush, former Florida governor - is a Bush
Herman Cain, a radio host
- Ben Carson, author and neurosurgeon
Chris Christie, New Jersey governor - status under investigation
Sen. Ted Cruz, of Texas - Meh
Mitch Daniels, former Indiana governor
- Newt Gingrich, former House speaker
- Nikki Haley, South Carolina governor
- Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas governor
- Bobby Jindal, Louisiana governor - Seriously?
John Kasich, Ohio governor
- Rep. Peter King, of New York - Seriously?
- Susana Martinez, New Mexico governor - Who?
Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor X 100000
- Sen. Rand Paul, of Kentucky
- Former Rep. Ron Paul, of Texas
Tim Pawlenty, former Minnesota governor
Mike Pence, Indiana governor
Rick Perry, Texas governor
- Sen. Rob Portman, of Ohio
- Condoleezza Rice, former secretary of state
Sen. Marco Rubio, of Florida - Meh
Rep. Paul Ryan, of Wisconsin - Meh
Brian Sandoval, Nevada governor - Who?
- Rick Santorum, former Pennsylvania senator
Sen. Tim Scott, of South Carolina - Who?
- Sen. John Thune, of South Dakota - Meh
- Scott Walker, Wisconsin governor - Meh
Former Rep. Allen West, of Florida

She's not tainted, but that is a big question if she doesn't run.

Rubio,Ryan = young 'previous' Conservatives who have recently been co-opted by the RINOs and have sold out. Very disappointing but they are young and very influenced still. BUT if ever a true Conservative would win the White House again they would fall in line just fine. Now longtime RINOs would not and would fight against Conservatism at every turn(a la McCain,Graham,Boehner,McConnell etc...you know the list).

Cruz, Jindal,Walker,Paul = Real Deal Conservatives who will not sell their soul to the Devil.

Why in the world would Ben Carson be a candidate for Attorney General?

You have to, you know, be a LAWYER to be Attorney General.

He's a likely tap for director of HHS if a Republican wins the election, though. I have no idea what his administrative experience in his medical career was - I think he retired too early to run a hospital, for example - but he would be a popular choice there.

Overall:
I know a lot of people on here HATE people they perceive as RINOs, but those guys make up most of the list of people who have a shot at winning a national election.

I could see Bobby Jindal having some crossover appeal. Christie has some crossover appeal and should be able to squash the ludicrous outcry over this traffic/bridge thing.

But Cruz, Walker and Paul? I have a hard time seeing it. How do those folks access the swing voters in the middle?

And the conservative wing... the Santorums and the Huckabees... all those guys do is force the nominee to go far enough right on social issues to win the Republican nomination, a move that sabotages them on the national stage.

Wouldn't think he would be.

However, i would also say that someone might want to have a little executive experience before being president.
