GOP mulls 32 candidates for president in 2016--so far

GOP mulls 32 candidates for president in 2016--so far

By PAUL BEDARD | JANUARY 15, 2014 AT 5:25 PM
Washington Examiner

If you thought the 13-candidate clogged 2012 Republican presidential primaries were too crowded and confusing, then you might want to skip the 2016 process -- because the Republican Party is suggesting that 32 might be interested in running.

The Republican National Committee is operating a 2016 Presidential straw poll that lists all 32, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. It's all part of a fundraiser.

The poll asks users to pick their three top choices. No results are available yet. The list:

- Sen. Kelly Ayotte, of New Hampshire
- Haley Barbour, former Mississippi governor
- John Bolton, former ambassador to the United Nations
- Jeb Bush, former Florida governor - is a Bush
– Herman Cain, a radio host
- Ben Carson, author and neurosurgeon
– Chris Christie, New Jersey governor - status under investigation
– Sen. Ted Cruz, of Texas - Meh
– Mitch Daniels, former Indiana governor
- Newt Gingrich, former House speaker
- Nikki Haley, South Carolina governor
- Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas governor
- Bobby Jindal, Louisiana governor - Seriously?
– John Kasich, Ohio governor
- Rep. Peter King, of New York - Seriously?
- Susana Martinez, New Mexico governor - Who?
– Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor X 100000
- Sen. Rand Paul, of Kentucky
- Former Rep. Ron Paul, of Texas
– Tim Pawlenty, former Minnesota governor
– Mike Pence, Indiana governor
– Rick Perry, Texas governor
- Sen. Rob Portman, of Ohio
- Condoleezza Rice, former secretary of state
– Sen. Marco Rubio, of Florida - Meh
– Rep. Paul Ryan, of Wisconsin - Meh
– Brian Sandoval, Nevada governor - Who?
- Rick Santorum, former Pennsylvania senator
– Sen. Tim Scott, of South Carolina - Who?
- Sen. John Thune, of South Dakota - Meh
- Scott Walker, Wisconsin governor - Meh
– Former Rep. Allen West, of Florida

I'll take that bet. She's going to run.

I'm surprised that it's looking like she's going to run. Do you think she'll get the nomination? I don't.

Right. I'd say Hillary and Jeb have about an equal chance of getting elected.

While I would personally have no problem voting for Bush, I doubt that he'll even run and I recognize the huge burden his family name would present.

So what's funny about it? On second thought, instead of answering that, I'm more interested in what you think of Clinton's chances.
I'll give you both.

I thought it was a funny/interesting/Alanis-Morisette-definition-of-ironic to see both comments in such close proximity to one another. Because I'd wager the last name "Bush" is still more toxic than Hilary Clinton.

As far as Clinton's chances, I think they're largely unchanged. The big portion of the country that was never going to vote for her anyone will still not vote for her. The big portion of the country that was always going to vote for her still would vote for her.

I don't believe Benghazi significantly affects the voters in the middle, the ones that will decide the election (as usual). It's not going to drive any part of the Democratic base away from her.

Benghazi matters a lot to the people that were never going to vote for Clinton in the first place. Outside that group, Benghazi just isn't the needle-pusher that many think it is/hope it is/want it to be.

I honestly have no idea on this, but is 32 a large field of candidates or is that normal? It seems rather large to me, but I really don't know.

If Jeb Bush decided to run and I were a betting man, I'd put down big money on him getting the nomination.

Republican voters are boring people. They love the familiar. Jeb Bush would be like a comfortable old boot to them. He has a decent track record and resume, looks nice, talks nice, and would have an easy time courting each of the divisive sects of the party (social conservatives, libertarian-leaners, and the undecided curmudgeons who never know what or who they like).

You make a good point. I'm thinking of him purely as a national candidate and "can he win" perspective.

I haven't seen updated opinion polls on the last name "Bush" for a while, but it was so overwhelmingly negative when I last saw it (before the 2012 election cycle), it's hard to imagine him improving enough in that regard to have a shot nationally.

I just can't see a Bush winning another presidential election in this generation, and was thinking the party would think about something like that when tabbing a nominee.

Hillary losing to Obama wasn't insignificant. She was the coronated contender with the inevitability campaign filling her sails. And a no-name community organizer with flowery prose punched her right in the nose. And if that weren't so bad, all of the automatic supporters she had lined up behind him one-by-one to take their shots too!

Have you read Game Change? It's worth a read. After going through that book, I don't think her campaign is a sure thing at all. I'm not sure why she would want to go through that again, especially at this stage in her life.

She may end up running again, but given what she has stacked against her at this point, I really doubt it. I think she'd be a fool to. Benghazi isn't going away, and neither is the fact that a large portion of the democrat base see her as John McCain in drag. It would be very easy for another high-prose candidate saying flowery nice "progressive" things to take the piss out of her again.

Think about it like this. Already she's shown that if she runs, she's going to run as a "pragmatic" Democrat. She's aiming for the Kotters of the world. Do you think Hillary is going to be able to keep the Kotters of the world nailed down and in her camp? Hell no! Someone else will come along and say something more pretty and more ideological than Hillary, and all of the so-called "pragmatists" will jump ship just like they did to Obama.
