Has anyone here researched their heritage?

I recently have taken an interest in this. My cousin traced my fathers side. I found the results fascinating hence my avatar. I have started looking into my mothers side. I am two generations removed from Ireland. This much I already knew however tracing my bloodline back to the potato famine and confirming that this lead directly to my presence in America has been an enjoyable investigation. The running joke in our family is my brothers and sister are one fifth of Irish whiskey from being pure. My father spilled the ink as he was three quarters Irish. My research has just begun~

Predominantly:

Father's side: Norway to Scotland to America
Mother's side: Scotland to Ireland to America

There are other lines thrown in there, most notably Melungeon. I can easily trace my father's line back about a thousand years or so. Probably more with a little digging around.

I have, extensively. The Internet has advanced genealogy probably more than any other field; Ancestry.com is irreplaceable, and rootsweb.com, findagrave.com, and others like Genuki and Genforum are helpful as well. The main trick is to make sure that whatever you use is backed up by references, because even the most well-meaning people sometimes put inaccurate information up there.

As for me, I'm mostly English, with some Swiss, German, Irish, and Scottish lines in there. One branch goes back to the Confederacy - my great-grandfather was a surgeon from Alabama, and the first Vice President of the AMA - and the others were basically New England ministers, farmers, or miners. I'm related to Meriwether Lewis, three families from the Mayflower, and - eventually - the British royal family, through John of Gaunt.

And it is all fascinating. There are so many stories of how people got here, who fought in which wars, which harsh winters they survived through, and how they all lived and died. I encourage you to find out more about the people besides just their names and dates; you have an awful lot to look forward to by learning their stories.

I'm a direct descendant of James Franklin, brother of Benjamin Franklin. How my family got from Philly in early 1700's to Missouri in the 1850's is unclear.

Found this out through DNA search and others searching for my DNA.

My family primarily descends from England on both sides. I believe there is some German and possibly some Irish in there somewhere.

Ha! It's funny that you say that.

A couple of days ago a woman I went to high school with announced on Facebook that she wanted to brag about her family tree. She said she was able to trace it back to one of the most powerful clans in Ireland, the witnessing of the crucifixion of Christ, the building of the tower of Babel, Noah, all the way back to Seth, son of Adam & Eve! (The exclamation point was hers, not mine).

I really, really wanted to reply that I've traced my family tree back to amoebas, but I figured it would just piss her off.

It's how you build a ancestry tree without all the time and effort of searching court records. It's just a DNA sample posted. No attachment to me unless I allow. I have no genetic time bombs so there was no future genetic discrimination by insurance or business interests at a later date.

It's kind of cool to know where you came from. My maternal side is predominately from Doggerland. This was a land mass that was between what is now Great Britian and France after the ice age. That means I'm the product of a long line of winners/conquerors.

Both of my Grandfathers were from Russia/Poland. Don't know much about Grandmas though. they were long gone before I came around.

My mothers father came to the US right after the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia around 1917/1918. And may I add he was a legal Immigrant. he started a glass business by carrying almost 200lbs of glass on his back and walking 30-40 miles a day selling it. he made a ton of money when an army ammo depot blew up in Perth Amboy NJ in like 1946 I think. almost every window in town broke. he was a big strong guy, like 6ft 4 225lbs. and could snap an apple in half at the age of 80.

My Father's father came here from whatever Poland was called before WWI (The Russian side). his past is merky since he was gone long before I was born.

I have a bit.

I'm tempted to say my last name, because it has been in the Jefferson City area since before the Civil War.

My Grandpa has a cannon ball that the family house that sat where St. Mary's hospital in Jeff City now sits.

I've gotten to see picture from then of my great great great grandma.

My family came from France, boarder area, sometimes under German control.

My wife has a heck of a family story.

Her grandfather and grandmother came from Austria after WW2. Her grandfather spoke both Russian and German, and fought for both sides to stay alive. Her great uncle, and most of the rest of the family got shipped to Russian war camps to never be seen again.
