Has anyone here researched their heritage?

I recently have taken an interest in this. My cousin traced my fathers side. I found the results fascinating hence my avatar. I have started looking into my mothers side. I am two generations removed from Ireland. This much I already knew however tracing my bloodline back to the potato famine and confirming that this lead directly to my presence in America has been an enjoyable investigation. The running joke in our family is my brothers and sister are one fifth of Irish whiskey from being pure. My father spilled the ink as he was three quarters Irish. My research has just begun~

My mom emigrated from Ireland and my late father's people came from Italy. I don't know too much about my family genealogy, though. As a mathematician, though, I can find out quite a bit about my academic geneaology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_genealogy), the dissertation supervisors of my dissertation supervisor (i.e. my "academic father"), using "The Mathematics Genealogy Project ( http://genealogy.math.ndsu.nodak.edu/index.php ). It's fun for me to poke around there and find out that I'm connected by direct succession to lots of the American (e.g. Jack Kiefer and Jacob Wolfowitz), German (C. Felix Klein and Carl Gauss) and French (Simeon Poisson, Pierre-Simon Laplace, Joseph Louis Lagrange) mathematicians that introduced some of the biggest ideas and made some of the biggest discoveries.

Father's side: German, Italian, and French Canadian. Though the German part came for Lorraine and Alsace so there is probably more French in there somewhere. French Canadian was in North America since the 1600s. German and Italian parts in the late 19th - early 20th century.

Mothers: German, Scottish, and English. No idea when they came over.

I had a great uncle who apparently ran Macon, GA in a Nucky Thompsonesque way up into the 1960s. Never met him since he died before I was born but my mom tells stories.

That's pretty cool. I just traced a friend's academic family back to Fredrich Leibniz. Edit: who I confused with Gottfried.

Ancestry is the bane of my existence, particularly on my mother's side.

There are a shit ton of 'people who fall through the cracks' in there, for instance a grand-uncle who was most likely Cherokee, but lost his memory in battle in WWI and took his Irish nurse's hand and name with no ties after the war and back on the mainland.

Further, the single best source of information on my mom's side of the family is a bible held by my mom's mortal enemy. No shit my mom got in a ****ing FIST FIGHT over her father's grave when this craven bitch tried to move the barriers to family plots during his funeral [ie, moving grandpa's plot out of the allotment IN SITU!!]

Dad's side is pretty straightfoward and distinguished. Two generations back and we hit the Newton line in Great Britain, yes that Newton and that Briton, a full and certified lineage straight to one of his sisters.

You wouldn't happen to have some Mennonite blood in you, would you?

They came over in the mid 1800's, but from a similar area.

after further review I would say no. Most Mennonites (from what I have read) would not serve in WWII. My grandfathers sons (all four of my uncles) served in WWII and one was highly decorated after fighting in Africa and Italy.
