Execution date set for Michael Taylor

http://www.kansascity.com/2014/01/24...or-killer.html

Execution date of Feb. 26 is set for man sentenced in killing of Ann Harrison
January 24
By TONY RIZZO
The Kansas City Star

The Missouri Supreme Court on Friday set a Feb. 26 execution date for one of two men convicted in the 1989 murder of a Kansas City teenager.

Michael A. Taylor was sentenced to death for the killing of 15-year-old Ann Harrison, who was waiting for a school bus in front of her southeast Kansas City home when she was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and stabbed to death.

Taylor, now 46, had come within hours of being put to death in 2006 before the execution was stayed. A co-defendant, Roderick Nunley, now 48, also remains imprisoned on a death sentence.

Both pleaded guilty, but each implicated the other as the primary assailant. They were sentenced to death by a Jackson County judge.

Taylor is one of about 20 Missouri death row inmates involved in a federal lawsuit challenging the state’s lethal injection procedures.

“This is exceptionally premature in light of the status of the lethal injection litigation,” his attorney, John Simon, said of Friday’s order.

Missouri did not carry out any executions between February 2011 and November. Since then, the state has executed two inmates after adopting a new execution protocol using the drug pentobarbital. A third man, Herbert Smulls, is scheduled for execution early Wednesday.

I was just posting in the Southerner thread in the main lounge about the dichotomy between attribute criticism and behavior criticism.

IMO this the extreme iteration of that.

Killing someone for existing and being a inconvenience is not the same as killing someone for heinous actions, particularly when those actions have already killed others.

And I have no apology for that position.

The fairness of sentencing, and the efficacy of investigation and prosecution are very different matters. And a very real and important part of why these things take so long. It's sad that death penalty cases don't attract the best and brightest minds, but a still manages generally to attract the most passionate and empathetic.

No, it is not the same. But if a person claims that abortion (and this can also be expanded to things like assisted sucide) is wrong because it is wrong to take a life, that all life is precious, and only God should take a life, etc. then being for the death penalty is hypocritical.

I said this in another post, but it is a little odd that the people who distrust govt the most--including and especially police and the courts, are ok with the govt executing people. They accuse the govt of political prosecutions and law enforcement all the time. But govt deciding to kill someone is ok with them.

I'm ok with the death penalty, I just like to point out hypocrisy.

Sure, some religious pro-lifers might take that position, but some could also take a pro-innocent-life position and there would be no inconsistency at all.

Very few conservatives are so skeptical of the government that they don't believe it's appropriate for the government to punish heinous, violent crime.

Which is more Hypocritical? Opposing the Death Penalty while Supporting Abortion or Opposing Abortion while supporting the Death Penalty?

Or lets put it another way. Lets kill an innocent unborn child or lets kill a worthless POS murderer.

I know which I would choose. Does that make me Pro Choice?

The only fair comparison when it comes to morality between the death penalty and abortion is you'll only kill an innocent person with one of them 100% of the time.
