Execution date set for Michael Taylor

http://www.kansascity.com/2014/01/24...or-killer.html

Execution date of Feb. 26 is set for man sentenced in killing of Ann Harrison
January 24
By TONY RIZZO
The Kansas City Star

The Missouri Supreme Court on Friday set a Feb. 26 execution date for one of two men convicted in the 1989 murder of a Kansas City teenager.

Michael A. Taylor was sentenced to death for the killing of 15-year-old Ann Harrison, who was waiting for a school bus in front of her southeast Kansas City home when she was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and stabbed to death.

Taylor, now 46, had come within hours of being put to death in 2006 before the execution was stayed. A co-defendant, Roderick Nunley, now 48, also remains imprisoned on a death sentence.

Both pleaded guilty, but each implicated the other as the primary assailant. They were sentenced to death by a Jackson County judge.

Taylor is one of about 20 Missouri death row inmates involved in a federal lawsuit challenging the state’s lethal injection procedures.

“This is exceptionally premature in light of the status of the lethal injection litigation,” his attorney, John Simon, said of Friday’s order.

Missouri did not carry out any executions between February 2011 and November. Since then, the state has executed two inmates after adopting a new execution protocol using the drug pentobarbital. A third man, Herbert Smulls, is scheduled for execution early Wednesday.

How so? It just seems odd to me not to trust the govt when it prosecutes people, when it imprisons people, but when the govt executes someone, there never seems to be any issues from the biggest skeptics.

morality is overrated...

practical realities are the death penalty wastes hundreds of millions of taxpayer money and is infrequently executed (see? a pun)...

it should be abolished...

abortion is and should be a medical decision between a woman and her doctor;

women should get to decide when it comes to their own bodies...

it should not be abolished...

practical realities should trump "morality" when it comes to the exercise of governmental power...

if only it were so...

I find it fascinating that the bible belt states are the ones pushing for death sentences.

You seem a religious fellow. You're ok with man deciding not just guilt--but taking a life based on the judgment of men?

From what I've heard, God doesn't want man to take another man's life. Life is sacred or something like that. Maybe I heard wrong.

see, that's the thing...

you're assuming the very conclusion that is being debated...

if a pre-20 week fetus is a person then abortion is murder, by definition...

if a pre-?? week fetus is innocent what does that do the the tenets of religions that require a belief in original sin?

i understand that you believe these things and that for you they are self-evident, but other people don't share your opinion or there would be no controversy...

in an increasingly secular society, old notions that performed well for eons are changing. i could regale you with stories about how good it was back in the (old) day in terms of segregation, religious repression and suffocating norms of behavior, but what would be the point?

>obligatory slam at iowa as being backward bible-humpers country and therefore ignorant as to the modern world<

the notion of a religious definition of what a person is entitled to do with their own body is slowly becoming passe...

it's the legal definition that matters and if it comes to the court before kennedy retires is will be firmly reiterated that a woman does in fact have the right to control her body up to a point...

roe v. wade isn't some liberals wet dream, it's been the law of the land for forty freaking years...

but i ramble...

I'm not advocating eliminating abortion. I find it totally retarded someone that commits a heinous act can sit in prison the rest of their being housed, fed, given medical attention while laughing at the world for letting him get away with it.

totally retarded, i agree...

but practical reality is that legal executions very rarely happen, so rarely that no-one seriously regards it as an effective deterrent...

and they are horribly expensive to litigate...

given that reality, we should stop executions altogether regardless of the moral/legal justifications either way...

the founding fathers took a dim view of mistreating prisoners and as a result there is that pesky bill of rights...

they specifically prohibited cruel and unusual punishment...

otherwise i'd be inclined to agree with you...
