Minimum wage will go up to $10.10 according to the Prez

It is only for new federal government contracts for services, like janitors and construction workers. What happens to the $15 minimum wage the fast food workers want?

Full of shit?

Nope.

I'll just say the same thing I said last time the CBO was talked about.

The GOP and conservatives take one sentence out of the entire report and talk about it out of context.

For the second time this month... what did the CBO actually say?

It will affect new jobs. Not get people fired.

And of course, to focus on that 500,000 job mark requires conservatives to completely ignore the following:

1. CBO finds that raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour would directly benefit 16.5 million workers.
2. CBO finds that raising the minimum wage would increase income for millions of middle-class families, on net, even after accounting for its estimates of job losses.
3. CBO finds that this wage increase would help the economy today.
4. CBO found that only 12 percent of low-wage workers will be teenagers.
5. CBO also found that raising the minimum wage would lift 900,000 people out of poverty.

So, yup, as usually, conservatives can only comprehend soundbites and have no understanding of context.

Like this context... part of the reason a raise would affect so many people is because of how many people are on minimum wage compared to historical standards.

Quote:
Finally, the CBO report offers a useful historical analogy for the proposed increase. Over the past 30 years, an average of roughly 5.3 percent of workers earned between the old and new minimum wages when Congress legislated a change. This time, under the $10.10 option, 10.1 percent of workers do. That's a testament to not only how far the minimum wage has fallen in real terms but also to how significant the increase would be relative to the size of the workforce.

Anyway, here is some more evidence on why we should raise the minimum wage.

Stop pretending you want the minimum wage at 10.10 when we all know you think it should be $15.

Mr Digger said it best. 500000 jobs won't be lost, 500000 people have the freedom to enjoy funemployment. ObamaCare is the gift that keeps on giving.

Obama said however he agrees with LittleLone Guy....employers can accept less profit and keep people on the job....that is disturbing on more levels than we can cover.

This is pure literature:

“The increase in the minimum wage would have two principal effects on low-wage workers,” the CBO said in the report. “The large majority would have higher wages and family income, but a much smaller group would be jobless and have much lower family income.”

Lost jobs? well its an estimate with some wiggle room..."its calculation is an estimate and said actual job losses could range from “very slight” to as many as 1 million positions."

One should understand the same range would likely apply to those other stated benefits...in other words, damn few will be helped and a million could be out of work....

Its also important to recognize those who fall off the job train and know they are not sad about it, they know that the buddy who got the big raise to $10.10 is no longer in poverty. 900,000 are lifted (almost a religious expression) from poverty through the simple little tweak in minimum wages. Now that other 500,00? well....thats a different report.

Here is a classic example of someone who can only comprehend soundbites and has no understanding of context. Damn few will be helped? Focus on the small number, ignore the 16.4 million works it will help.

And this doesn't even count the jobs that will be created by the new truck mileage standards.

BigHead Al Sharpton. His take on Minimum wage...invoke Slavery!!!

Rev. Al Sharpton said of the minimum wage, “What must be weighed in any analysis, CBO and others, is that blacks suffer disproportionately from having to do work and not get the kind of wages that we need. This is a central concern in our community. It’s not just having a job; but having wages that are guaranteed to provide for our families. We had full employment in the black community during slavery. We just didn’t have wages. So we don’t want just a job, we want a job that pays, and pays so that we can take care of our families.”

Really hard to save up or go to community college when you work two minimum wage jobs to meet the bills and still need food stamps.

Anyone who has any understand of American labor history knows that the minimum has supported a family before inflation erased it.

Why do you support jobs in your community that cost the tax payer money through the social safety net and don't allow people to better themselves?
Nobody is "owed" anything. I have no time to listen how a father of four with a wife that plays housewife can't support his family working minimum wage. Hey genius, maybe you should get yourself established BEFORE you go procreating like you live on a farm in the 19th century.

These people can go to school if they want. Move in with the folks or some other friend/family member that can help out, get the student loans, and go about freeing themselves from the torture of living with a minimum wage job. Sure, the minimum wage could support a family in the 50's, but times change.

We need to stop enabling every single person that thinks life is too hard and expects someone else to pick up the slack FOR them.
