Trader Joes attracts White People.

So much for urban renewal. I guess a crack house and a busload of whores would be a way better deal.

Black residents reject Trader Joe’s because it would attract too many white people

The Trader Joe’s grocery chain has withdrawn plans to build a store in the heart of a predominantly black neighborhood after a black leadership group fought the move.

The Portland Development Commission was set to give the grocer a large discount on property that had been vacant for years, pricing it at just over $500,000, down from an appraised value of $2.9 million, according to The Oregonian.http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/i...ican_lead.html

The Portland African American Leadership Forum sent a scathing letter in December to city leaders, saying the plan would price residents out of the area and the group“remains opposed to any development in North/Northeast Portland that does not primarily benefit the black community.”

Trader Joe’s would increase displacement of low-income residents and “increase the desirability of the neighborhood,” for “non-oppressed populations,” PAALF wrote.

“[This decision] reflects the city’s overall track record of implementing policies that serve to uproot, displace and disempower our most vulnerable community members,” the letter said.

Trader Joe’s bowed out amid the controversy.

“We run neighborhood stores, and our approach is simple: If a neighborhood does not want a Trader Joe’s, we understand, and we won’t open the store in question,” a company spokesperson said in a statement to The Oregonian.

But not everyone is happy about the outcome.

“There are no winners today,” Adam Milne, owner of Old Town Brewing Co., told The Oregonian. “Only missed tax revenue, lost jobs, less foot traffic, an empty lot and a boulevard still struggling to support its local small businesses.”

Oops, you had already responded. Yeah, similar operations came from Springfield, Little Rock, Des Moines, and any other city of decent size for which St. Louis was closer than Chicago. FWIW, I worked there for six years while I went back to school and picked up a couple of degrees. My fiancé manages in Chesterfield.

But you are probably right. Gentrification would cause a general panic anywhere. Best keep it like it is.
I think it's interesting that the party that is so vocal about property rights has no problem with gentrifying neighborhoods who have a legal stake in property. Would anyone deny that building that Trader Joe's would probably lead to a string of development that would eventually push business and property owners out of that location?

I mean... I'm not casting stones at people who are pro-gentrification. I love development and even though I know it's wrong, get excited about hearing new development in bad neighborhoods. But I can't blame the community for speaking out against it and I don't think they're wrong.

Then stop bitching about grocery deserts, and the lack of nutrition in 'oppressed communities.'

Or better yet, stop spending our money researching it.

Property rights? WTF does this have to do with property rights and when have I been "so vocal" about property rights.

So true. Hopefully the empty lot will grow up in weeds and attract rodents and trash and produce not one dime for the community and somewhere else that wants to have a great new store will welcome Trader Joes.

Interesting this story comes on the heels of the Aldi store opened in KC Inner city with massive tax dollars associated with it in response to Michelle Obamas early issue of food deserts in inner cities. Must not be an issue on the west coast

Like I said...
I know it's wrong, but I secretly enjoy gentrification because it often leads to really cool neighborhoods.

I'm just saying that if you're a resident of that neighborhood, why wouldn't you stand up to a move like this that will undoubtedly lead to you being gentrified out of the neighborhood you live in?

What an odd non sequitur.

And what do you mean 'these people.'

The people in this thread?

The author of the article?

The people in the community?

Surely not the PAALF. That's racist.

If it is the PAALF, they would be satisfied with nothing short of Federal trucks driving in and giving away food, then driving back out.

If Trader Joe's succeeds there, it will likely be followed by development of new retail, like a trendy restaurant/bar that has an inner city flare. That will be followed by new housing developments that attract higher income people looking for that kind of neighborhood.

Business owners in that neighborhood will see rents and property taxes skyrocket, and close up shop. Residents in that neighborhood will see the same, and see businesses they frequent disappear.

I'm responding to people who are making this a purely black and white issue. It isn't. They shouldn't have used the race card (depending on how they used it, that is...) but on the point about being priced out, they're probably 100% correct. And I don't blame them for speaking up about it.

Gentrification is so often over-inflated. I lived on The Loop when it was a shithole, the Tivoli was shuttered, as were a lot of other business fronts.

Joe [Blueberry Hill] Edwards bought a ton of it up and fixed it nice, real nice. It really is a world class boulevard with like 40 restaurants, many upscale, The Tivoli fully refurbished, a concert hall, a hotel, even some big box retailers like Urban Outfitters.

That started 15 years ago and continues apace, and one block north of The Loop are $750K to $1M houses, and one block south of The Loop is $250@mo shitty tenement apartments, same as there were 20 years ago.

I lived right on The Loop in a small but nice apartment for 7 years, right in the middle of the revitalization, and my $375@mo didn't change from day one to the end.
