Trader Joes attracts White People.

So much for urban renewal. I guess a crack house and a busload of whores would be a way better deal.

Black residents reject Trader Joe’s because it would attract too many white people

The Trader Joe’s grocery chain has withdrawn plans to build a store in the heart of a predominantly black neighborhood after a black leadership group fought the move.

The Portland Development Commission was set to give the grocer a large discount on property that had been vacant for years, pricing it at just over $500,000, down from an appraised value of $2.9 million, according to The Oregonian.http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/i...ican_lead.html

The Portland African American Leadership Forum sent a scathing letter in December to city leaders, saying the plan would price residents out of the area and the group“remains opposed to any development in North/Northeast Portland that does not primarily benefit the black community.”

Trader Joe’s would increase displacement of low-income residents and “increase the desirability of the neighborhood,” for “non-oppressed populations,” PAALF wrote.

“[This decision] reflects the city’s overall track record of implementing policies that serve to uproot, displace and disempower our most vulnerable community members,” the letter said.

Trader Joe’s bowed out amid the controversy.

“We run neighborhood stores, and our approach is simple: If a neighborhood does not want a Trader Joe’s, we understand, and we won’t open the store in question,” a company spokesperson said in a statement to The Oregonian.

But not everyone is happy about the outcome.

“There are no winners today,” Adam Milne, owner of Old Town Brewing Co., told The Oregonian. “Only missed tax revenue, lost jobs, less foot traffic, an empty lot and a boulevard still struggling to support its local small businesses.”

Yeah, but you have to bring your own bags.

They are hands down the best place for chicken salad, cole slaw and fresh salsa.

If it is the PAALF, they would be satisfied with nothing short of Federal trucks driving in and giving away food, then driving back out.
To whom were you speaking (in the post I previously quoted)?

I'm getting a Trader Joe's in my neighborhood. I'll let you know whether it increases displacement of low-income residents and increases the desirability of the neighborhood for non-oppressed populations.

In the fall they have butternut squash ravioli as well as pumpkin ravioli. Its only available for a limited time and is simply fantastic.

Mostly when I was buying it I was there at a slow time of the day and didn't evaluate the ethnicity or the financial standing of others who were there.

I go there so often I actually bought one of the canvas bags they sell, they have so much great stuff, frozen chicken and fish, fresh meats, little cordon bleu and broccoli cheese chicken patties for a buck, better eggrolls than any I've found in more expensive grocery stores, the frozen pizzas aren't bad... yep, they rule, love that place.

They get these fresh green beans from Mexico that I SWEAR are grown right next to hot peppers, you can taste the pepper flavor in the beans... they. are. awesome.

They have the 1 pound tubs for $3.79. Sometimes in the deli section in back, sometimes at the start of the meat chest, right around the corner from the deli, up on the shelving in the cooler.

It's Aldi's own brand, but I swear it has to be made at the same place TJs gets theirs, and sells for a dollar more a tub.

Looks like this

Never been to a Trader Joes. I thought it was a trendy, gluten-free nonsense store, and therefore more expensive and douchey. Maybe I'll check it out now.

I have been to Aldis once and that did kind of seem like a dump. Maybe it was the turnstyles for the carts or the lack of brands I recognized. I guess I didn't trust the store brands of a discount grocery. The fresh food, meat and produce at WalMart sucks and I didn't figure Aldi would be any better.

I used top hate Aldis, but I truly think they've benefitted from being associated with Trader Joes.

Trader Joes - like Whole Foods with produce and fresh meat, but then like if you could buy Sams's Club in individual portions for prepared/frozen stuff. Cheap booze and beer, an amazing array of dried fruits, nuts, snacks and juices and coffees.

Aldis has really upped their game in terms of fresher stuff like the deli section [which is fancy cheeses and fresh salsas, and hummus and the like, don't go looking for premium brisket] and their produce. Great values on staples, really can't be beat on sugar, flour, pasta, . . . anywhere.

$.99 Pineapples
$2.99 field greens [Obama's arugula] 4 whole heads.
Above mentioned chicken salad.
$2.99 milk, skim to 4% all the same price.
Cheap tortilla chips, black olives, refried beans, block cheddar
$.39@lb bananas
Big Casey's style pizzas [Mama Cozzi's] for $3.99
AWESOME frozen fruit bars [like a fudgsicle, but with pureed fruit], 4 for $1.99.

Those are my go tos.

Oh, and in the particular case of my store, if there's day old bread . . . not off to the thrift store, . . . $.10, , , ten cent day old bread, no high fructose corn syrup.

Oh, good Lord. I may have to do a damned review of this. I'm going to try it just like that. In fact, I have some New York Sharp Cheddar that seems ideal for just this occasion.

in Minneapolis, there were already several Trader Joe's locations but when they wanted to build one in one of the neighborhoods that was even snootier and more hippie/hipster than the rest of the city, it became a huge controversy. Not because of gentrification, but because it would supposedly be unfair competition for the locally owned co-ops and such in the area, and because people didn't want the increased traffic.
