Anyone Following The Protests In The Ukraine?

I've been seeing some impressive pics of protests in Kiev.

Protests against new anti-democratic laws in Ukraine are increasing in intensity, with four citizens reported dead. As you can see in these extraordinary images by Ilya Varlamov, the demonstrators are using rockets made with fireworks. They look like scenes from some science-fiction movie about urban warfare.

The latest reports talk about at least four people killed and hundreds injured by the police. After the massive protests against the government's rejection against the European Union in favor of an alliance with the former Russian oppressors, Kiev officials announced new repressive laws limiting the people's right to protest. These urban battles are the people's reaction to those laws.

Ukraine was a former Soviet Republic, created after a civil war between pro-communist and the Ukrainian People's Republic armies at the beginning of the 20th century, right after the fall of the Russian Empire. The communists won, and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was established. In theory, it was an independent state, but in fact—like all republics in the USSR and satellite countries—it was under a tight control by the Kremlin.

Looks like Putin will take the Ukraine, Obammy will draw his 30somethingth red line, EU will say Oh My this is not good.

Putin has two years of free shots. Obama has no balls, EU is living off Germany, and UK is run by as big a loon as Chamberlin was.

History repeating itself?

Shooting at Ft Sumter
Sinking of the Maine
Gulf of Tonkin
Everyone surprised about Pearl Harbor except FDR.
Iraq had WMD's and was behind 9/11
Saddam ripped babies from incubators
Hitler dressed up Germans as Polish soldiers to make it look like they started a war

Yeah! I'd say history repeats. It won't change the fact that all govt's are full of miscreants and liars. And it won't change the fact that most people are...

...when it comes to their own govt always being innocent of any wrongdoing or at least of stupidity.

Well, you shouldn't be wishing for something like that. It's unreasonable and irresponsible. It has nothing but downsides for us, as did our initial interference. That interference just provided ample opportunities for Russia's interference. We need to cut our losses NOW!

Instead of ratcheting up the game we need to get out. Revolutions, civil wars are too difficult to control the outcomes. Europe up to Russia's borders should not be brought into NATO, a military alliance with missile launching sites, nukes and armies as it will cause more problems. It already has caused this problem. As Rozeff says, Europe needs to emulate how the US used to deal with its border with Mexico and Canada not too long ago.

I'm not lost on you point Sir, but we live in a unreasonable and irresponsible world too. So I'd prefer not being the guy running around a global bar-fight trying to make peace. I had more typed, but I'll leave it at that...

Russian GRU Spetznaz is taking over everything in Eastern Ukraine. The biggest problem the Ukrainians are facing is the fact that the Russians have infiltrated literally everything in Ukraine and it's impossible to carry anything out without it going to hell.

I love how millions of unarmed protesters are being compared to a thousand soldiers armed with machine guns, sniper rifles and RPGs. The West is definitely being hypocritical when they try to differentiate between the two.

Fun fact: one of the first buildings to be stormed in Donetsk by the "local" self-defense militia was the Donetsk Opera theater. The "locals" mistook it for an administrative building.

It's also looks like that just like in Crimea, the local self-defense militia has been learning how to breach, clear and capture buildings SWAT-style in their free time.

Wonder if all those milennials who were hugging and making out with each other on Maidan ever stopped to think that Russia just might not have let the whole thing slide. I bet they didn't ever consider it. What do you think?

I think Russia is out of ****ing control. I also think that a nation has the right to refuse to be a vassal state there for the fleecing. I think it's probably a good idea to fight oppression. What do you think?

Have to always consider the outcomes of any decision. I said they were crazy to topple their government given how vital Ukraine is to Russia's national security. The Maidan protestors obv thought differently. I think t was dumb but history will give us the final answer in time

You mean they're doing what some US and its NGOs did earlier?

Yeah can't forget about the thugs in Maiden. The place is a mess. Pretty much what commies used to do when taking over a govt. The Nat'l Center for Democracy folks are really the same ilk. It's about power and control of the globe.

Your people made a deal with the devil. Well some of them anyway. Becoming a pawn is what happens to the rest of you when they do that. Trying to get sympathy from Americans without looking to the right culprits makes your people complaining about the Russians look pretty dumb.

Many Americans think their govt is out of control too. At home and abroad--at least the ones that are informed enough about what our govt is doing abroad.

I mean wtf is John McCain over in the Ukraine so much about? He represents Arizona.
