Anyone Following The Protests In The Ukraine?

I've been seeing some impressive pics of protests in Kiev.

Protests against new anti-democratic laws in Ukraine are increasing in intensity, with four citizens reported dead. As you can see in these extraordinary images by Ilya Varlamov, the demonstrators are using rockets made with fireworks. They look like scenes from some science-fiction movie about urban warfare.

The latest reports talk about at least four people killed and hundreds injured by the police. After the massive protests against the government's rejection against the European Union in favor of an alliance with the former Russian oppressors, Kiev officials announced new repressive laws limiting the people's right to protest. These urban battles are the people's reaction to those laws.

Ukraine was a former Soviet Republic, created after a civil war between pro-communist and the Ukrainian People's Republic armies at the beginning of the 20th century, right after the fall of the Russian Empire. The communists won, and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was established. In theory, it was an independent state, but in fact—like all republics in the USSR and satellite countries—it was under a tight control by the Kremlin.

“Taking Ukraine’s eastern and southern regions would be hugely beneficial for Russia from a military and economic point of view,” said Mikhail Barabanov, the editor-in-chief of the Moscow Defense Brief magazine.

I've read that's not really true since Ukraine is comparatively poorer than Russia. If we looked at it in terms of a business acquisition, it would be dilutive since the Per Capita GDP of Ukraine is only 6k while Russia is 14k. Wouldn't the cost of integrating a poorer region outweigh the benefits? Defense is only one aspect of an economy and a small one at that.

I guess you have to consider what Russia would gain by controlling Ukraine's production facilities. I don't know if controlling production is worth the cost of conquering the region-I would assume it is as the defense industries of Ukraine were operating at a decent profit level. Invade, "nationalize" the companies and production facilities, hand them off to cronies in the oligarchy, and the purchase prices offset the cost of invasion. The rich get richer and Putin expands his empire.

In fact I don't think it would surprise anyone if the oligarchs were to put up preemptive bids for the Ukrainian businesses and for those bids to be earmarked for funding the invasion/nationalization/occupation process.

The expert quoted said it would be "good for Russia".

Yeah, militarily and economically. I get that direct control of chunks of your own military-industrial complex is more favorable than relying on a foreign producer militarily. I don't know if it is "good for Russia" economically, but you have to think it is good for the oligarchs that run Russia if they get their hands on those assets.

I'm simply responding to the comment "good for Russia" so I'm not discussing Oligarchs or the near obsession you and Pants have for this term. Yes it may be good to acquire Ukraine's entire military apparatus. No, it would not be fun integrating millions of poorer people than your own.

I am pointing out that "good for Russia" is a broad term. Do you have something other than "oligarchs" that you would rather use to describe the oligarchs?

Putin's Export Machine Rolls Right Over Sanctions, Outcry
By Alaric Nightingale May 9, 2014 11:00 PM CT 151

Vladimir Putin’s incursion into Ukraine and the international condemnation that followed haven’t put a dent in Russia’s exports of gas and raw materials.

The world’s largest energy producer shipped 2 percent more gas to Europe in the first three months of 2014 than it did in the same period last year, government data show. Diesel output for export increased, while cargoes of grains, palladium and nickel either climbed or were about the same. Russia’s crude oil exports fell 0.2 percent from last year.

Economic sanctions from the U.S. and European Union haven’t dimmed demand for what Russia can sell even as price increases betray investors’ anxiety over future supplies. Any plan to pinch the country’s trade to punish Putin for his March annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula would have to overcome Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and China’s appetite for the country’s metals.

Last year, Russia produced 42 percent of the world’s palladium, used in pollution-control devices in cars, and was the second-largest source of refined nickel, a component in stainless steel. At the same time, China was the world’s biggest metal importer.

.......

The U.S. and Europe have mostly ordered economic penalties against Russian individuals in retaliation for the country’s incursions in Ukraine, stopping short of targeting its biggest companies shipping energy and commodities.

Russia’s energy shipments are unlikely to be curbed because the country and its Western buyers are too dependent on each other for there to be an interruption, Bain said. Europe imports about 30 percent of its gas from Russia, half of which crosses Ukraine. Other Russian commodities are less dependent on demand from Europe or the U.S., cushioning the impact of any disruptions, she said.

Russia has been building trade ties with China, including long-term oil deals valued at hundreds of billions of dollars, to tap Asia’s biggest energy consumer as the European economy slowed. China is Russia’s largest trading partner with $95.6 billion of turnover in 2012, followed by Germany, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Whatever the reason for the price gains, plunging shipments from Russia isn’t one of them. The country exported 51,600 tons of nickel in the first quarter, about the same as the same period last year. Grain supplies, which were affected by drought in 2013, expanded more than sixfold to 2.01 million tons in March. Palladium to Switzerland, an indicator of Russia’s total shipments, fell by three kilos to 201. March output of diesel for export rose to 4.02 million tons from 3.27 million.

“So far we haven’t seen any disruption,” Kryuchenkov said.

Pretty much. Russia is taking advantage of Ukraine in exactly the way that they promised they wouldn't when they signed the treaty.

Time for more sanctions. (Busts out laughing)

Obama hasn't said anything about this in weeks. He's moved on to more important things, like calling Michael Sam to congratulate him on being drafted .

Son of U.S. Vice President Biden Joins Ukraine Gas Company
The Moscow TimesMay. 13 2014 18:49 Last edited 18:49

The youngest son of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, has been appointed head of legal affairs at Ukraine's largest private gas producer — a move he said would benefit Ukrainians and the country's economy.

In a statement published Monday on its website, Burisma Holdings announced Hunter Biden would join its board of directors and head the company's legal unit.

"As a new member of the board, I believe that my assistance in consulting the company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine," Hunter Biden said in the statement....

Let's try to guess which one will be least effective at their jobs. It's a tough one. I don't think I can even call it. My gut says Joe.
