NFL could pull Super Bowl if Arizona religious rights bill passes

Call it what you want -- anti-gay or religious rights -- but if Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs a controversial bill, you might not be calling Arizona the home of the 2015 Super Bowl.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, S.B. 1062, is the current controversy du jour out of Arizona, and the National Football League is with the opposition.

“Our policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other improper standard,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told USA Today. “We are following the issue in Arizona and will continue to do so should the bill be signed into law, but will decline further comment at this time.”

The Arizona Super Bowl Host committee released a statement saying it disagreed with the bill and its impact on Arizona’s economy.

“On that matter we have heard loud and clear from our various stakeholders that adoption of this legislation would not only run contrary to that goal but deal a significant blow to the state's economic growth potential,” a committee spokesperson said. “We do not support this legislation.”

Arizona is currently slated to host the 2015 Super Bowl at Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium.

Opponents of the bill contend that it will allow Arizona businesses to refuse service to homosexual customers.

But, as with most bills in Congress, the attack ads have little to do with the actual legislation.

Proponents of the bill claim that no, businesses will not have carte blanche to refuse service to anyone they disagree with based on religious grounds.

Specifically, proponents claim that there is nothing in Arizona’s current laws that prevent businesses from discriminating against anyone — and yet, strangely enough, discrimination isn’t happening.

Apparently, businesses in Arizona have wanted to discriminate but have just been waiting for a bill to allow them to do so — which this bill does not. Also, what business would quietly wait to discriminate?

“Business owners do not want to deny service to gays,” the Christian Post wrote. “This is not because they fear government sanction. Rather, it is because: 1) Their religious, ethical or moral beliefs tell them it is wrong to deny service; and/or, 2) the profit motive — turning away customers is no way to run a business.”

Sounds like the opponents — and the NFL — need to take a knee.

Well, in the pure sense of the word it's not, there's just nobody who's going to fight for them (at least not right now).

That being said, I think the caterer was just dumb, they should have taken their money and messed up the order. Made the wrong cake, or something. Perhaps forgotten and put a "Man & Woman" thing on the top and sprinkled it with little crosses.

SO it takes a pretty radical person to say you can't refuse business to somebody, but they will, but nothing says you can't garner some good press by being taken to task publicly for an Oooooops. Ooooopes happen all the time.

I'm all for equal rights for everyone and all that, but I'm sick of the news recently with the "gay this, gay that". Good lord, you'd think gays are 1960's era blacks. I hope they give that bus seat to the gay dude with the green spraypainted short shorts. He's a hero in my eyes.

Well, the buyer could ask for their money back if they messed up the order. That is if they had to pay in full before seeing the final product. If not then they could refuse to pay for it.

Plus the gay buyers could call that a "hate crime" these days and still sue the baker or get him/her prosecuted.

I haven't read the whole thread but I'm gonna say that the NFL will do what ever the Feds want since they are allowed to violate the anti-trust laws.

Well, gay people arent actively lynching and killing religious people. Theres no history of gay people hanging religious folks with a rope and burning them while everyone celebrates. Gay people arent asking for Christians to give up their rights as human beings because they dont like their interpetation of the bible.

Now, the caterer is stupid for not just saying they had another event that night. Simple and done.

As far as AZ is concerned, they already protect the religous and this law was just doubling down on that. They can refuse service openly and non one can do shit about it. Gays can get fired in Az just for being gay and they cant do shit about it. This law wasnt needed because it already is in action. If someone doesnt want to bake you a cake, in AZ, they dont have to.

As far as the NFL, Apple, American Airlines and the countless others that had a problem with this bill, they have a right to have an opinion and act on it, just like Chik-fil-A did. I heard Tampa was the spot the NFL was talking to yesterday, and I dont think NFL fans would of boycotted the SB, or football in general,, or Tamp Bay, because they moved it.

I find it hilarious that the same people who think boycotting Chik-Fil-A for their beliefs is ridiculous, are the same people who would boycott the NFL, or Apple or anyone who had a problem with this bill just because they dont agree with their stance on it.

Hypocrisy is in full force in this thread.
"carry fire in one hand and water in the other To be duplicitous, to engage in double-dealing; to be two-faced, to speak with forked tongue. The expression comes from Plautus; it continues “to bear a stone in one hand, a piece of bread in the other.” Thus, the expression indicates that a person is prepared to act in totally contradictory ways to achieve his purposes."

I for one, dont give a shit what anyone does in their home, or what they believe as long as it doesnt impede my life or my values. A gay person contributing to society in a financial manner isnt hurting me or my values. And it certainly isnt hurting the economy. In fact, with the disposable income they have, they are helping, espcially f they can be involved in the marriage process. Everything from the cake and the flowers, and the licensing and the travel and the divorces. it blows my mind, in this economy, people want to shun their money away over a book written 2k years ago.

I have to deal with people I dont like everyday, but in the end, paying my bills and enjoying life is more important. So I just smile, do I what I do, and walk away. Why cant a cake baker do the same? Its called life, get the **** over it. Dealing with people you dont like is part of it.

If people can already "refuse service openly" (which is correct) and this law is just "doubling down on that" (which is close to correct), then why are critics acting like this is a huge deal that will lead to open season on gays?
