Why are politicians so damn dumb?

No a R or D issue…..What is it genetics? Are they just a little nuts? Think they can't get caught?

You have Mel Reynolds. Dude comes up poor, makes it through Univ of Ill, Harvard, gets elected …making it in the big time….guy is a role model

Ends up disgraced. Prison. Statutory Rape. ****er is a dirt ball..

In steps Bill Clinton, gets the dude out…all is good till this:

Ex-Illinois congressman and convicted sex offender Mel Reynolds arrested in Zimbabwe

HARARE (Reuters) – Former congressman Mel Reynolds has been arrested in Zimbabwe, an immigration official said on Tuesday, after state media reported the convicted sex offender had been found with pornography at a local hotel.

Police and immigration officials were investigating Reynolds for living in the southern African country without a valid visa, Francis Mabika, an assistant regional immigration officer, told Reuters.

Mabika said Reynolds has been in Zimbabwe since November, but declined to give further details.

Reuters was unable to reach Reynolds for comment. A spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in Harare declined to comment.

The state-owned Herald newspaper said the former Illinois congressman had been arrested at a hotel in the capital Harare on Monday, where he had been found in possession of pornographic videos and pictures.

Possession of pornography is a crime in Zimbabwe.

He had also run up $24,500 in unpaid hotel bills, the newspaper said.

“I have been in this country 17 times where I have done a lot of work for the people including the fight against sanctions,” the newspaper quoted Reynolds as saying.

The Herald’s website showed a picture of a baseball-capped Reynolds being led away by two men, his hands clasped in front of him.

Reynolds, a former Rhodes scholar, was a fast-rising star in the U.S. Democratic party when he was forced to resign in 1995 after being convicted of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography.

The former representative made a attempt at his former seat last year, running in a primary race under the slogan “Redemption”.

They think they're above it all, but of course they're not.

Common sense goes out the door when you get a little bit of fame and power, apparently.

We have ****ed up the classification of a politician and the role of politics in general. Politicians are no longer working for the behest of their constituents, they're working for their own political continuation. They're all ****ed. We have to change the structure, not just the ones in charge.

Congress wasn't intended to be a career, it was to be a term of public service. The real issue are the idiots voting/not voting in primaries which give us far too many wingnuts from both sides of the isle.

Need to vote out all incumbents every single election, and the system would work better, maybe.

Term Limits. The voters no longer can be trusted to do what is right.

errr...apparently, no, he didn't. Apparently he was first convicted for statutory rape, and served ALL of his time for that. He was then convicted of bank fraud and other charges, and only served a portion of that time before his sentence was COMMUTED (not pardoned) by Clinton.

Apparently he's just a scumbag, however, but at least let's get the story straight on what Clinton did/didn't do.

On August 22, 1995, he was convicted on 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. He resigned his seat on October 1 of that year.[2]
Reynolds was sentenced to five years in prison, thus he expected to be released in 1998. However, in April 1997 he was convicted on 15 unrelated counts of bank fraud and lying to SEC investigators. These charges resulted in an additional sentence of 78 months in federal prison. Reynolds served all of his first sentence, and served 42 months in prison for the later charges. At that point, President Bill Clinton commuted the sentence for bank fraud. As a result, Reynolds was released from prison and served the remaining time in a halfway house.[3][4]

No idea where you get this idea from, but it's basically wrong. Most of our early politicians were politicians for life, if you will. And that was because there were not many who could AFFORD to be politicians. It didn't pay well and it required you to be away from your farm/business for a very long period, when communication/travel were very difficult.

Certainly they didn't tend to stay in Congress exclusively. Many moved around to Administration appointments or ambassadorships, but some were in Congress for many many years, such as Henry Clay or Daniel Webster.

They're not dumb. They are just dictated by moneyed interests, but they have to make the case to their constituents that they're not puppets of the wealthy. So they make arguments that frequently make no sense to attempt to provide some plausible deniability.

Well, let's be honest, SOME really are dumb. Like stunningly dumb. Shockingly dumb.

P.S. How in the hell does the Admiral hold it together? "We don't anticipate that." I'm pretty confident I'd either be sitting there with my jaw in my lap, or really struggling not to burst out laughing.
