Texas family fights for euthanasia laws after daughter's death

So I am sure it has been discussed before but what is everyone's opinion on laws like this?

Quote:
Corpus Christi, Texas (KTVT) A Texas family is fighting to make euthanasia of terminal patients legal in the state. They don't want other families to go through the pain that they have endured.

At 19-months-old, Natalie Newton was a busy, happy toddler. until September, when those busy little feet took her into the family's backyard pool near Corpus Christi. Natty, as the family likes to call her, was revived.

"It was just horrible. blind and deaf and can't move can you imagine?" Her dad said.

After more than an hour without oxygen, doctors determined that she would ultimately not survive.

"You think that dreadful thought: We can't let her live like this, and you can't believe you just thought that," said her dad.

The hospital's ethics committee agreed. The question then became: How, exactly, would natty die?

"They're saying, ok, well, the nutrition and the hydration. 'Well, isn't that starving her to death?'" The father asked them.

Her grandfather, Bradley Newton, says withholding 'nutrition' as it's nicely put was the only option that Texas law allowed.

Over eight and a half long, awful, agonizing days, Natty was starved.

"That's just the most cruel, inhumane thing. We euthanize dogs for humanity reasons, we euthanize serial killers but, a 21-month-old baby has to starve for almost 9 days?" Questions the dad.

Newton says his family has been traumatized by the process and is traveling the state sharing her story in the hope of forcing change, for Natty's sake.

My thoughts:

On her particular case I would need more info.

Being blind and deaf doesnt justify euthanasia. What type of paralysis? Is it total paralysis that requires breathing support? If she had total paralysis, than it would be really easy to end her suffering by withholding care (i.e ventilator) instead of via nutrition.

In general one cant force a person of sound mind to live. That being said, the decision of life or death should be that of the patients and not anyone elses (guardian or medical power of attorney) unless its been clear that they are serving the wishes of the patient.

Finally, a patient cant force a medical provider to provide care or force a medical provider to provide euthanasia.

In a situation such as this, I can see the parents and staff DNR the patient and moving her to hospice care with palliative support. The article makes it seem like this would be cruel or inhumane, but it doesnt have to be with enough opioid support.

No good answers in this kind of situation but I trust the families over the government in cases like this.

took her into the family's backyard pool

Sorry, I'm not contributing to what you are asking here but I'll say it anyway: WTF are parents doing with a backyard pool and a toddler? They're dangerous as hell. If you have one, it needs to be surrounded by protection like Arizona requires. The fact they let their toddler wander into this situation should force these parents into criminal charges.

I agree that pools are dangerous, but so are a million other things with a toddler. You can take your eye off of them for just a second or two and they are off to the races into something that could hurt them.

The silver lining is that toddlers can be taught to swim.

families thrust in a situation such as this can be irrational. They are thinking out of emotion, sometimes without all the facts. Ethics commitees serve a valuable purpose so that decisions aren't made "in the heat of the moment", but made after careful deliberation and based on sound medical advice.

Ultimately the decisions made should be for the well being of the patient.

This story is horrible, but how is the law going to be written to say when the parents have a right to have their child put to sleep? Who is going to judge what the nature of the illness is and has to be? What are they going to do with the majority of cases where there are broken homes or different parents' thoughts to consider?

Is there going to be a government death panel that you submit test results to that decides when someone is dead or not? Will the patient just suffer until the process winds through the courts? I'm not convinced regulation is the answer here.

After spending over a decade in the pool industry, I mostly agree with you.

Having said that, pools are not dangerous to children if proper precautions are taken. Plenty of parents have both pools and small children and nobody dies. You make it sound as if having both is some kind of nuclear bomb waiting to go off. More kids drown in bath tubs.

Yeah this situation seems a bit off.

It's really not a question of if your kid is going to get away from you. It's a matter of when. And how trained are they. I could swim before I could walk. Now I could swing a cat and hit a bunch of Iowans that have never learned.

I had this same "let him starve" conversation regarding my father. Inhumane, barbaric, monstrous and absurd that there is no better way to deal with these situations.

I dont think that is the case. the family is using the story to try to get something changed. They dont want to say that her loss was all for naught.
