California man swept out to sea during Sunday baptism

Benito Flores, 43, was helping his cousin — Pastor Maurigro Cervantes — perform the religious ceremony on a man at Guadalupe Beach when a wave toppled the trio. Cervantes said he tried to grab his cousin, but the man was swept away by another wave.

The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

A California man was feared dead after he was swept out to sea during a beach baptism on Sunday, officials said.

Benito Flores, 43, was helping his cousin — Pastor Maurigro Cervantes — perform the religious ceremony on a man at Guadalupe beach when a hellacious wave toppled the trio, KCOY-TV reported.

“A big wave came and took Benito,” Cervantes, of Jesus Christ Light of the Sky, told the news station.

“I tried to take him out. He was heavy and then another big wave came.”

Pastor Maurigro Cervantes said he was performing a baptism on a man with his cousin, Benito Flores, when a big wave knocked the three men under water. Cervantes said Flores was swept out to sea by a second wave.

Pastor Maurigro Cervantes said he was performing a baptism on a man with his cousin, Benito Flores, when a big wave knocked the three men underwater. Cervantes said Flores was swept out to sea by a second wave.
The current pulled Flores away from the shore at the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve — about 70 miles north of Santa Barbara — and hasn’t been seen since.

Rescue crews were expected to return to the scene on Monday to search for the missing man.

Cervantes told the Santa Maria Times that about 25 people were at the ceremony, which he said he performs about two or three times a year.

So if the baptism wasn't finished, is the dead guy ****ed or does he get the benefit of the doubt?

This whole thing seems suspicious. Was this guy around?

Lake, river, ocean, in the baptistry in the sanctuary... all are common. Since the act is only symbolic, it doesn't matter too much where it happens.

A Baptism can be done over the kitchen sink. If that's the case then over a toilet, in a swimming pool, a puddle or a hose is just fine as well.

I have been thinking about this since you first posted it. I think that there is a benefit. Not necessarily spiritual, but at least a psychological benefit. If someone believes in the stuff it becomes a ritual of cleansing and rebirth. Sort of a way to define the beginning of the "new you" going forward. That kind of thing can be very powerful.

I suppose. I guess I was more referring to whether it will alter the course of their "afterlife."
