Jensen we need you. Tell us agin this isn't so...

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has found thousands of instances of voter fraud in the state, thanks to a 28-state crosscheck of voter rolls. Initial findings suggest widespread election fraud.

765 voters with an exact match of first and last name, DOB and last four digits of SSN were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in N.C. and the other state in the 2012 general election.
35,750 voters with the same first and last name and DOB were registered in N.C. and another state and voted in both states in the 2012 general election.
155,692 voters with the same first and last name, DOB and last four digits of SSN were registered in N.C. and another state – and the latest date of registration or voter activity did not take place within N.C.
The second point is key, as double voting is election fraud under state and federal statutes. Punishment for double voting in federal elections can include jail time.

This is the main issue for me, I can understand some politicians missing this but more reporters and the damn NC election people should be giving an explanation beyond just "possible errors."

I have no problem with people INITIALLY thinking this since it is the obvious answer but I would hope they would reconsider when given a more plausible alternative theory.

I can try to find it but I know in 2010 four cases in Colorado alone resulted in people being indicted. I have not seen any data on actual conviction rates however.

Yep. You really can't rely on anything Kris Kobach comes up with or what hcf posts. Kind of like this entire thread.

We, being the people in this thread... meaning me... so kinda the imperial We.

There are many cases of voter fraud and many prosecutions... nothing close to the scale of 35,000 people and nothing I would call "systemic." That however doesn't change the fact that the system is a pile of crap that can easily be defrauded. Not finding people when you aren't looking isn't very hard. I really don't care if it isn't even happening more than we are catching, that doesn't make it "ok" to have a system that could be easily defrauded. It's lazy and irresponsible when it comes to something as important as voting.

If it follows the strict guidelines I laid out earlier, I'm all for this as well. Each citizen needs to have full ownership of their FULLY encrypted data with the federal government acting only to administer the network but not able to access the data for tracking of any kind outside the scope that a given citizen opts in for. I'd want this specified in the law and probably only truly comfortable if it was put into a full on Amendment.

Agreed that voting fraud exists. I'm uncertain that it can be entirely eliminated without creating a different problem -- depriving legal voters of the right to vote due to overzealous efforts to purge the voter rolls of every possible duplicate.

Just because my name is Bill Johnson and I was born in August/September (nine months after the holidays, and the timeframe in which most kids are born) doesn't mean I should be deprived of the right to vote.

I do agree that voter fraud should be pursued when suspected, and charges brought when possible, which could even result in such persons losing their right to vote indefinitely in my book, along with possible fines/imprisonment.

Perfection in voting is likely not feasible, and I'm not sure it's worth eleventy billion dollars to achieve even if it is, theoretically speaking.

Is the infinitesimal % of voting fraud worth spending tens of millions of dollars to try to fix when the real problem is politicians rigging elections?

As I stated earlier, the system could handle more than just voting and would save money in the long run. It shouldn't be done simply to eliminate the voter fraud we know of, it should be done because it is the right way to do things and eliminates the possible fraud we don't even really look for.

If it costs $100 million dollars to implement it would be a steal. I have said all along that this is my "ideal" and that I doubt our govt could actually pull it off.

You're highly science-minded. The vast majority of the population is not.

Lawyers, as a group, are not. Litigators (not all lawyers) are basically paid to CREATE the reality that is best for their clients based on the facts presented. They don't create the facts, but they then spin the facts in ways that are often completely mind-boggling.

Which is why I far prefer transactional work (doing business deals) and dislike litigation.
