Minnesota lawmakers consider renaming Asian carp

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The troublesome fish currently known as Asian carp may get a new name in Minnesota over concern that the current one casts people from Asian cultures in a negative light.

Proposals advancing in the Legislature would require the Department of Natural Resources to refer to the fish as "invasive carp," a reference to the threat the non-native fish pose to Mississippi River-area ecosystems.
Sen. John Hoffman, the Champlin Democrat sponsoring a bill in the Senate, said some people of Asian descent have complained about the name.
"Caucasians brought them to America," Hoffman, the bill's primary Senate sponsor, said Thursday. "Should we call them 'Caucasian carp?' They have names. Let's call them what they are."
Asian carp actually describes two closely related fish, the bighead carp and silver carp, that are native to a region of Asia spanning China, part of Siberia and North Korea, said Cindy Kolar, a fish biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va. Since their introduction to the United States about 30 years ago, they have become a threat to native fish including those in the Great Lakes, Minnesota and elsewhere.
Jean Lee, who testified for the Senate bill Thursday, said she became upset by the term as it was used during a round-table meeting she attended with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials.
"They were referring to the Asian people in terms of being invasive species. This was offensive," said Lee, executive director of the Children's Hope International Minnesota chapter. That St. Louis-based nonprofit organization facilitates international adoptions from countries including China and Vietnam.
Sia Her, executive director of the Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans, a state agency, also testified in support of calling the fish "invasive carp." The negative response to the fish "will reflect negatively on our community," she said.
The key aspect of the fish is that it is invasive, she said.
DNR spokeswoman Julie Forster said the agency was unaware of any complaints that "Asian carp" was offensive. But she said the agency would follow any direction the Legislature gives.
The Senate bill was approved and now awaits a floor vote. A similar House bill hasn't yet had a committee hearing.
A similar bill was introduced in the Iowa Legislature last year but didn't make it out of committee.

A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp), the goldfish is a domesticated version of a less-colorful carp (Carassius auratus) native to east Asia.

Guess, I'm not into fish that much to have bothered to know. But I love learning new things.

I am also terrified of fish. Even minnows. So I try to swim only in pools.

Will zoologists and plant scientists be required to ask some elected ****wits what names are appropriate for new discovered species? This country is doomed.

Maybe they should keep the fish name of "Asian carp" and change the name of Asian people to "CaucAsian".

This is the stupid CARP we have here.

Can't offend anyone and everything is offensive.

Ban communication.

This is from Joe Soucheary-Pioneer Press and KSTP radio.
Mildly funny. One of sayings says "Minnesota-the land where nothing is legal"

Quote:
Champlin DFLer John Hoffman said on the Senate floor Monday that calling the Asian carp by the name "Asian carp" is "hurtful to some people," according to a news report that said some people are concerned that "it casts people from Asian cultures in a negative light."

Hoffman dutifully championed a measure that officially renames the fish "invasive carp."

These are the big carp that jump out of the water and smack boaters right on the noggin. Sometimes they get into the boat and flop around and cause all kinds of consternation until they can be whacked with an oar to quiet them down. As the invasive carp get ever closer, we cross our fingers that a solution will be found to prevent them from getting into the Great Lakes ecosystem -- your lake -- where apparently they eat everything they can get their fins on. They are at least as unwanted as zebra mussels, but the zebra had no benefactor in the Legislature.

It never occurred to me to associate any Asian human being with a fish. I just figured that they were carp that got over here from Asia and that we don't want them because they are uncharitable to our native species. But progressive types are always turning over rocks. They get up in the morning and feel it imperative to pounce on our darkest instincts, even if the instincts don't even exist until the virtuous point them out.

Our workdays probably don't intersect, but I called Hoffman to ask him who exactly is offended. I haven't heard back from him yet. But if the likes of Hoffman go down this road, I know a couple of Swedes who don't like being associated with meatballs. African killer bees? I think not. Polish sausage. Chinese checkers. German chocolate cake. That's obesity. Brussels sprouts. Sprout is a little person. French toast. To say "toast" means to say that it is over, you are done, as in "the Colorado Avs are toast." I would imagine that the French among us would not like to be thought of as over.

"Carp" is probably the problematic word here, not "Asian." "Carp" means to find fault and complain constantly; harp on petty grievances; nag or fuss. Carp the fish have always suffered a public-relations problem. They are fat, essentially colorless, suckers for even the crudest bait and never proudly displayed from a stringer for a picture. Why, when kids catch a carp, they haul it around in a wagon just to show the other kids.

It is a further point of irony that Asian carp feature none of the characteristics of the carp that we have grown up with in Minnesota. Asian carp are athletic to the point of being acrobatic, are fast, clever and determined.

Not even a do-gooder could have gotten very far with a name change if they were called Asian Acrobats or the Asian Flyers.

The cleansing and sanitizing of the language is all around us, a destructive path that diminishes the idea that words mean something. They mean what they mean.

To find offense at every turn will lead only to the idea that falsification is better than truth. At Duke University, with which I have some familiarity because of a kid I used to have, there is a campus initiative underway to ban certain words and phrases, including the term "man up." To say "man up" is rejected by the enlightened scholars at Duke, a poster says, because "I don't believe in gender norms." I am not making that up.

Man up -- get tough, pull yourself together -- is what you have to do when those Asian Acrobats take a flying leap at your head.

Joe Soucheray can be reached at jsoucheray@pioneerpress.com or 651-228-5474. Soucheray is heard from 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays on 1500ESPN.
