Tea Party loses primary in NC

Thom Tillis, from the establishment GOP beats the TP...

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/06/politi...html?hpt=hp_t2

My guess is the TP doesn't win a single senate primary this go round. The GOP learned its lesson last time with the likes of Aiken et al and will select establishment candidates in the attempt to take back the Senate. They may succeed.

From the article, it sounds like he had two challengers who split the opposition to establishment/RINOism, a tea party candidate and a baptist minister. Getting to 40% in your party's primary isn't that great.

It stops the run-off. And splitting the vote is the TP's problem in many of the primaries and is one of the reasons I don't believe they will win any of them. The resurgence of the establishment GOP is gonna happen in 2014 and 2016, imo.

Bush V Clinton redux...and I would bet on a Bush victory this time around.

I could see it occurring. The tea party isn't going to elect very many people to high offices because they won't work within the framework that exists in politics, which is incremental change and bargaining and such. The scorched earth policy where you refuse to compromise on anything won't win until you are the majority, and it only serves to divide your party and hand seats over to the other party in the meantime.

If the tea party chills out some, and decides to take a seat at the GOP table with evangelicals, fiscal conservatives, old guard republicans, and moderates, they could help steer the party agenda. I don't think the nature of the movement lends itself to leadership really, and some of the individuals who have tried to take the mantle aren't the right people to lead them into becoming a permanent voice in politics.

It wouldn't be a bad thing for the GOP to get over this schizm and emerge unified for 2016. Obama running amock hasn't gotten us anywhere in the last 6 years.

Jeb Bush would be an awful candidate and the base wouldn't be happy obv but what's it say about the GOP when they again nominate someone for the highest office who isn't even working? Romney hadn't been governor since 2006 when he ran in 2012, same with Bush who left Florida that same year. 2016 would be a 10 year stint away from public office. Can't the party find anyone who's actually IN politics?

His wiki bio says he went to work at Lehman in 2007. I hear they had a rough ending a year later, though he wasn't in their mortgage division. Still it'd be hilarious to try shaking the W reminder of the collapse with his bro who was working at the biggest failure of the time.

If the rest of the primaries go this way, this is actually pretty good news for the country. Maybe now Republicans will be slightly less terrified of getting primaried, and have some incentive to work on bipartisan initiatives in Congress.

What bipartisanship do Democrats display? Please cite any examples.

Can either one beat the juggernaut that will be (D) Clay Aiken?

Edit...truth is i really don't even know if this is the same race as Aiken will be in. I just saw a shiny news story about Clay...and then i saw this thread....they seemed to go together.

How about taking the republicans own idea for Obamacare and offering it to them?

Immigration reform (which some republicans are on board with) is an attempt at a bipartisan bill.

There was an online tax reform bill that died in the House recently.

It's not really much of a secret or in dispute that republicans in red districts have much more to be a afraid of getting "primaried" from the right than from being seen as obstructionist on any bipartisan efforts. A common attack ad in a super red district is showing Candidate A as having compromised with Obama/democrats on *anything*, followed by claims that Candidate A is not a "true conservative".

My hope is that if the crazy wing fades the House will become more of a sane place.

She's a career politician and fairly sleazy, but she knows how to get things done and when to compromise - something the tea party nutjobs have a hard time with.
