#bringbackourgirls

So I'm kind of fascinated by a cultural discussion that is happening around this whole "#bringbackourgirls" thing.

On one side, you've got Rush Limbaugh, sounding a little callous:
I just think this is pathetic. I'm just stunned. We got 300 Nigerian girls kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda group, and nobody cared or talked about it for a while. Hillary wouldn't call 'em a terror group. Now, all of a sudden, for some reason, we're on a big push to get 'em back and this is how...? Well, you can't read the writing. It's a plea for people on Twitter to get in gear and bring the girls back. It's #BringBackOurGirls. Apparently there's a Twitter... What do you call 'em, handle? It's the number sign
"BringBackOurGirls." (interruption) It's a hashtag, okay.

Anyway, there's Mrs. Obama looking sad and grim, and the sad thing here is that the low-information crowd that's puddling around out there on Twitter is gonna think we're actually doing something about it. (interruption) Exactly. Yeah, they'll say, "At least she is trying, Mr. Limbaugh. What are you doing? At least Mrs. Obama cares! At least they're trying to get them back."

Here it is again, closer. See it? Is that not pathetic? What the hell message does that send? Imagine if bin Laden were still alive. Imagine Ayman al-Zawahiri. Can you imagine? They're laughing at this over in the huts and so forth wherever they are. It is just unbelievable. #BringBackOurGirls. They're Nigerian, unless there's something that we don't know.

But are we really this powerless? The correct way to look at this is the audience that will see it -- the Twitter, low-information universe -- will say, "Oh, Mrs. Obama! At least they care, and at least they're trying to do something."
On the other side, I guess you've got Michelle Obama, who is doing the radio address this week to "demand justice for Boko Haram kidnap victims."

The question that I have about all this is "to what end?" I don't particularly like Rush Limbaugh. He's tone deaf at the very least. But isn't it also tone deaf to hold up a sign for twitter without any real call to action? This reminds me a lot of the #occupywallstreet stuff, where they call a bunch of people to "raise awareness" - but that's the extent of the call to action.

I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. As a father, I feel terrible about these girls, but I would be disgusted if the extent of the people with the power to do anything about it basically turned that loss into a branding campaign for how in touch and compassionate they are.

So, a quick selfie works in lieu of substantive, meaningful actions or policies aimed at getting the girls back?

I think it is the pure vacuous, meaningless and shallow nature of the response that leaves me scratching my head.

"Oh **** guys, we better stop doing bad shit because twitters blowing up about this guys."

It's a laughable response to an abhorrent act.

She's the First Lady, she's not the President; she has no executive authority of her own. Pretend for a moment that she actually really does care about these kidnapped girls - what exactly should she do?

She can't order in the Marines, so she's raising awareness. It's what First Ladies do.

This is pointless posturing for political points with hipsters.

Terrorists who steal little girls don't care about hashtags and sure as hell aren't giving them back unharmed because celebrities post this on twitter and look shamefully at them through instagram. Asswipes who buy and rape stolen little girls don't care about this and it will have zero real life affect on the outcome of this. It's nothing more than public ululating before they head over to Waffle House.

Nigeria hasn't acted like a friend to us and honestly, the world was very clear that they wanted the United States to 'stay outta their business'.....so we should do just that.

A lot of terrible things happen in this world, and unless they directly affect our country, our citizens or our friends, it's not our problem.

Quite a few times in the past decade "the world community" has been pretty vocal that the United States should mind our own business and stay out of the internal affairs of other nations. Well, that's fine with me but it also means we take a seat when shitty things happen too. Not pleasant, but not our problem.

It's not like Obama is going to do much, if some band of outlaws were raping him he'd just put out a presser that said "now, one or two or three more pumps in my rectum and I'm going to have my staff put sanctions on you by putting duct tape over the 'In" slot on your piggy bank".

This child theft thing is terrible. If we want to do something because it affects Americans or American interests, find the guilty parties and send them to hell. If not, we shouldn't be spending American tax dollars on a Nigerian problem when Nigeria has been hostile to us.
