#bringbackourgirls

So I'm kind of fascinated by a cultural discussion that is happening around this whole "#bringbackourgirls" thing.

On one side, you've got Rush Limbaugh, sounding a little callous:
I just think this is pathetic. I'm just stunned. We got 300 Nigerian girls kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda group, and nobody cared or talked about it for a while. Hillary wouldn't call 'em a terror group. Now, all of a sudden, for some reason, we're on a big push to get 'em back and this is how...? Well, you can't read the writing. It's a plea for people on Twitter to get in gear and bring the girls back. It's #BringBackOurGirls. Apparently there's a Twitter... What do you call 'em, handle? It's the number sign
"BringBackOurGirls." (interruption) It's a hashtag, okay.

Anyway, there's Mrs. Obama looking sad and grim, and the sad thing here is that the low-information crowd that's puddling around out there on Twitter is gonna think we're actually doing something about it. (interruption) Exactly. Yeah, they'll say, "At least she is trying, Mr. Limbaugh. What are you doing? At least Mrs. Obama cares! At least they're trying to get them back."

Here it is again, closer. See it? Is that not pathetic? What the hell message does that send? Imagine if bin Laden were still alive. Imagine Ayman al-Zawahiri. Can you imagine? They're laughing at this over in the huts and so forth wherever they are. It is just unbelievable. #BringBackOurGirls. They're Nigerian, unless there's something that we don't know.

But are we really this powerless? The correct way to look at this is the audience that will see it -- the Twitter, low-information universe -- will say, "Oh, Mrs. Obama! At least they care, and at least they're trying to do something."
On the other side, I guess you've got Michelle Obama, who is doing the radio address this week to "demand justice for Boko Haram kidnap victims."

The question that I have about all this is "to what end?" I don't particularly like Rush Limbaugh. He's tone deaf at the very least. But isn't it also tone deaf to hold up a sign for twitter without any real call to action? This reminds me a lot of the #occupywallstreet stuff, where they call a bunch of people to "raise awareness" - but that's the extent of the call to action.

I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. As a father, I feel terrible about these girls, but I would be disgusted if the extent of the people with the power to do anything about it basically turned that loss into a branding campaign for how in touch and compassionate they are.

No military, no special forces--nada!

If these thugs really sell these girls off as slaves, which the Independent UK has reported, then y'all pony up the 7 pounds they want, whether it's per girl or each; buy them and set them free. I'm sure there's more than enough people who would be willing to engage in some emancipation compensation. That's how much slavery in the western world ended. No need to put a single American soldier's life in danger. Piece of cake.

But then wouldn't you be siphoning money from the US directly into the hands of terrorists?

Also, welcome back.

I suggest Mrs. Obama grab a weapon and go get them.

I'm certainly not apposed to doing this the only way it will get done, but I am opposed to someone like Michelle thinking her part is to hold-up a sign and tweet it.

Michelle, I'll go in with you if you'll put yourself in harms way. I've been there, and I'll go again, but I want you by my side.

Must be awesome being Michelle Obama and knowing that every single thing you do, no matter how innocuous, will drive Republicans nutjobs completely apeshit.

Not everything she does drives me apeshit. This doesn't.

When she spends like Marie Antoinette for her vacations during a depression and gets involved in increasing the food budgets of local schools which is none of her business, it does.

Meh. If commenting on hipocrasy is ape-shit, so be it. What real Americans do during a liberal presidency is almost like what the liberal media does during a conservative presidency. The only difference is one is "the people" the other is the bought press.

This is such a political stunt because the WH has learned that not only their uneducated base cares but that the MM is beginning to make a big deal about this situation and the WH feels they have to appease the polling numbers even though they could care less. But her look in this picture to me say's, "I'll look like I care, but ain't nothing going to happen ya'll" because me and Barry like chaos around the world" for radical global transformation reasons.

Do you think if these were Jewish girls being held hostage by the Palestinian terrorists Michelle would do the same ?
