#bringbackourgirls

So I'm kind of fascinated by a cultural discussion that is happening around this whole "#bringbackourgirls" thing.

On one side, you've got Rush Limbaugh, sounding a little callous:
I just think this is pathetic. I'm just stunned. We got 300 Nigerian girls kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda group, and nobody cared or talked about it for a while. Hillary wouldn't call 'em a terror group. Now, all of a sudden, for some reason, we're on a big push to get 'em back and this is how...? Well, you can't read the writing. It's a plea for people on Twitter to get in gear and bring the girls back. It's #BringBackOurGirls. Apparently there's a Twitter... What do you call 'em, handle? It's the number sign
"BringBackOurGirls." (interruption) It's a hashtag, okay.

Anyway, there's Mrs. Obama looking sad and grim, and the sad thing here is that the low-information crowd that's puddling around out there on Twitter is gonna think we're actually doing something about it. (interruption) Exactly. Yeah, they'll say, "At least she is trying, Mr. Limbaugh. What are you doing? At least Mrs. Obama cares! At least they're trying to get them back."

Here it is again, closer. See it? Is that not pathetic? What the hell message does that send? Imagine if bin Laden were still alive. Imagine Ayman al-Zawahiri. Can you imagine? They're laughing at this over in the huts and so forth wherever they are. It is just unbelievable. #BringBackOurGirls. They're Nigerian, unless there's something that we don't know.

But are we really this powerless? The correct way to look at this is the audience that will see it -- the Twitter, low-information universe -- will say, "Oh, Mrs. Obama! At least they care, and at least they're trying to do something."
On the other side, I guess you've got Michelle Obama, who is doing the radio address this week to "demand justice for Boko Haram kidnap victims."

The question that I have about all this is "to what end?" I don't particularly like Rush Limbaugh. He's tone deaf at the very least. But isn't it also tone deaf to hold up a sign for twitter without any real call to action? This reminds me a lot of the #occupywallstreet stuff, where they call a bunch of people to "raise awareness" - but that's the extent of the call to action.

I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. As a father, I feel terrible about these girls, but I would be disgusted if the extent of the people with the power to do anything about it basically turned that loss into a branding campaign for how in touch and compassionate they are.

According to Eric Margolis, this incident has more to do with the race between the US and China for Africa's resources. China has offered to send "specialists" to aid in finding the girls; and the US wants its military in there before the Chinese arrive. Forty percent of Nigeria's oil is exported to the US, supplying 10% of our energy.

No one seemed to care that BH killed over 1,500 civilians in previous rampages in the northern part of the country. Or that one of the most corrupt and thuggish govts in the world, the Nigerian govt, killed thousands of Muslim villagers. Often, Islamic law is put in to deal with corrupt govts. BH also has little to do with Muslim practice; they just use the Islam label for cover. In the meantime, stealing girls for child brides is a traditional pastime in sub-Saharan Africa. This is only now being reported for media sensation so US and British troops can go in.

Lot more to this...
http://ericmargolis.com/2014/05/boko...gerias-crooks/

Eric Margoilis: A veteran of many conflicts in the Middle East, [ and third world countries] Margolis recently was featured in a special appearance on Britain’s Sky News TV as “the man who got it right” in his predictions about the dangerous risks and entanglements the US would face in Iraq.

The Obama Regime is sending in special forces and intelligence agents. So don't worry righties. This is just a faux humanitarian cover needed to create outrage under the banner of the "War on Terror."

Probably, at least in part, because the general public wasn't aware of it.

Somehow, there was a lot more publicty about this recent event. Although I'm not sure how since stuff like social media is worthless for raising awareness.

It doesn't help your cause at all, Fairplay.

Nothing like "Leading from behind" while "Evil prevails as good men do nothing".

Which pretty much sums up Obama's presidency so far both foreign policy wise and 'especially' here at home.

Well that choice of words colors it a certain way that I never used. It's called emancipated compensation. That was used to free African slaves in Great Britain. Why risk any American lives when it can be avoided?

It's really not American govt's business, but any individual of private group that is concerned can get them freed. Start some underground railroad of sumthin'. People here are free to act without the govt for humanitarian purposes.

That's why the Obama regime bombed Libya, supplied arms to AQ in Libya that went to Syria, sent CIA into Kiev, has continued the push to expand NATO in Europe, and special forces into Nigeria. Ronald Reagan didn't act all the time on every bad event in the world either. The mood of the country doesn't support all this military intervention either. So I suggest, the right mollify its FP stands somewhat if they want to win Congress or the WH. They are out of touch.
