Henry "The Nose" Waxman wants hearing on Redskins

Yes you heard it right, the rep from suzzer's own district wants a hearing on the redskins name which implies racism to the native Americans.
Its been told that some find it so offensive it causes them to drink booze everyday.

Henry Waxman wants hearing on Redskins

California Rep. Henry Waxman is the latest lawmaker to weigh in on the controversy surrounding the NFL’s Washington Redskins team name, asking to bring the issue before a House panel hearing.

“Offensive remarks by Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association, have raised public awareness of racism in sports,” Waxman, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Energy Commerce, wrote in a letter Friday to Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.)

“In the case of the Washington football team, the offensive conduct is public, not private. But it is being condoned and defended by National Football League,” Waxman wrote.

Waxman, who slams the Redskins name as derogatory and offensive, calls for a hearing by the House Energy and Commerce committee, which he said has “primary jurisdiction over professional sports.”

Echoing remarks made by last week Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Waxman criticized both NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Redskins owner Dan Snyder for not changing the name.

“[The committee] could play a constructive role in challenging racism by asking Mr. Snyder and Mr. Goodell to explain in a public hearing how their actions are consistent with the public interest,”

The name should be changed. Tradition is not a good enough reason to have a professional football team at the highest level named after a racial slur. The only reason it hasn't been changed yet is because Native Americans are so completely marginalized in this country.

My take on the Washington D.C. NFL franchise name:

1) It is acknowledged that the term "redskin" is an ethnic slur equatable with chink, ****er, or spick and shouldn't be uttered in reference to a person or group of persons as an epithet in civil discourse. Further, it must be understood that the treatment of the indigenous people of North America by white settlers can be considered a genocidal act -at the very least indirectly.

2) The team's current owner, front office executives, coaching staff, players and other employees have not proven themselves to be racist against Native Americans or any other ethnicity, however.

3) The franchise has used said slur as a name from almost from the point from it's creation, which at the time, was not considered as much as an offensive slur due to different cultural mindset and understanding of racial sensitivity. At the time of it's usage, it and it's previous name (the Braves) were understood to inculcate the positive traits of a racial stereotype (bravery, tenacity, prowess in combat) rather than to lampoon the stereotype as a whole.

4) The acceptance of the two preceding points does not override the first point, however one must consider that in the current cultural mindset, the term "Redskin" is more connected to the sporting team more so than to racial stereotype -be it positive or negative, but also that the origin of the stereotype is a ethnic group that is largely impoverished and facing near extinction as a distinct national identity. The term on it's own (with no contextual connection to the team) is offensive to most -if not all- of the native peoples.

5) With all of the aforementioned points understood, considered and accepted, it is my conclusion that if there is no majority effort by the tribes (through their representatives or an established person-by-person census) to change the name, then the team name should remain due to the connection of its former players and staffs as well as it's fan base, but more so as a constant reminder of the abhorrent acts done to the natives of the land such that we as an American nation should be on guard to prevent such acts from occurring to another group of peoples and the current strife these people are still largely subject to, but also as an artifact that does hold up the bravery and identity of a group of peoples that fought to protect their way of life against all odds as well as the perseverance of those who are a number of those people to this day.

Flame on my more liberal friends. Flame on.

For those who laugh off 'slippery slopes' [no offense intended, that'll make sense if you read the whole articles].
And before the but, but, buts, I realize this all coming out of non-free speech Commonwealth of Britain.
Jeremy Clarkson was trying to choose between to equal cars and the script called for 'eeny meeny miney moe'
While many things have been used in the second line, there was a time when a racial term was used.
Clarkson mumbled that second line rather than enunciate the line.
Eagle eared activists leapt to the most inflammatory interpretation of what aren't even words.
The take didn't make the actual episode.
Now;
Extensive additional forensic analysis of the footage
Calls for him to be fired
Calls for criminal prosecution
Formal entreaties to 200 Nations to not air the BBC broadcast of the episode, even though it unambiguously contains no offensive content,

including a direct entreaty to Barack Obama to exert presidential power to BLOCK BBCA from airing it.

While watching Nashville news on TV, I heard that some Indians said they're proud to have an NFL team named after them.

If only there was a team somewhere that was named after Native Americans but with a name that wasn't an outright slur. Ideally, it would be a name that denotes power, authority, or rulership - a name in which those same folks could take just as much pride.

Hmm . . .

I don't think red skin is a slur. You got something against red skin potatoes too?

I think being named for an NFL team does denote power and authority but also toughness. Man they were tough, you should see some of those games they had their little one's play to toughen them up. Puts the white man to shame. Oops!

You took a count? Perhaps they should pool their money and buy the team--then they can do whatever they want instead of telling others what to name their property.
