Henry "The Nose" Waxman wants hearing on Redskins

Yes you heard it right, the rep from suzzer's own district wants a hearing on the redskins name which implies racism to the native Americans.
Its been told that some find it so offensive it causes them to drink booze everyday.

Henry Waxman wants hearing on Redskins

California Rep. Henry Waxman is the latest lawmaker to weigh in on the controversy surrounding the NFL’s Washington Redskins team name, asking to bring the issue before a House panel hearing.

“Offensive remarks by Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association, have raised public awareness of racism in sports,” Waxman, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Energy Commerce, wrote in a letter Friday to Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.)

“In the case of the Washington football team, the offensive conduct is public, not private. But it is being condoned and defended by National Football League,” Waxman wrote.

Waxman, who slams the Redskins name as derogatory and offensive, calls for a hearing by the House Energy and Commerce committee, which he said has “primary jurisdiction over professional sports.”

Echoing remarks made by last week Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Waxman criticized both NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Redskins owner Dan Snyder for not changing the name.

“[The committee] could play a constructive role in challenging racism by asking Mr. Snyder and Mr. Goodell to explain in a public hearing how their actions are consistent with the public interest,”

Why did the Indian call us "Pale Face?" Because they called white people by how the saw them. Seems reasonable to me.

Zunis called Spaniards “moustached people” and that describes their appearance. Kiowas used the name they they had for donk-eys and mules-- meaning “ears sticking out.” Part of an Indians’ ear was covered by their hair but not the "white mans."

If anyone says we don't have a team called "Pale Faces" or "Ears Sticking Out" I guess pale sounds like a sick person and ears like a buffoon. But Redskin as a reference to indians connotates toughness to me.

I think the litmus test is to apply it to any other ethnicity, and in that, it fails spectacularly.

The term, even though it was installed by a notorious racist and named for a white man pretending to be a Native American, would nonetheless have been certainly far less offensive in 1933 than it is now. However, cultures change over time, and 80 years later we have a different definition of the term.

Eventually, the name is going to change. Maybe because they lose their copyright, maybe because of some other legal action, maybe due to social or ownership pressure or a Donald Sterling-like situation. I think it would be in Snyder's best interests to change it ASAP, but I'm not in charge, so if he wants to drag it out, that's fine.

But it is going to change.

I only know of one ethnicity that is used this way for a football team. There are the Celts in basketball though--Celtics.

What about another group, say "pirates" or "buccaneers"--not exactly known for being good guys but just tough.

Or "Seminoles?" The Seminoles are proud to be named after FSU's football team and were consulted on it.

Maybe animals will be next such as seahawks, orioles or cardinals. Actually, AZ Cardinals are an insult to cardinals.

I don't think most people even know that. I didn't.

I heard on TV Synder doesn't want to change it.

I'm looking up the origin of the term "redskin" and per wiki is of disputed origin.

Slate has its own article:

That's exactly my point. There are no other American pro teams with names that reference the skin color. There are teams named for tribes or nations (Celtics, as you mentioned, Vikings, Blackhawks), rulers (Senators, Kings, Chiefs), warrior types (Blue Jackets, Cavaliers, Braves), even religious leaders (Padres and Saints), but none calling out the skin color.

The only other team anywhere who has an equivalent aspect to their team is the Cleveland Indians, not for their name, but for their grinning, buck-toothed Chief Wahoo character. I would say you should imagine that logo as another ethnicity, but lo and behold, someone already has.

Back on the team names, though, imagine if there was an team called the San Francisco Yellows, El Paso Brownbacks, or the Pittsburgh Negroes. How well do you think they'd be received? That's what I mean by "another ethnicity".

For whatever reason, our culture and society has felt it more or less acceptable to treat Native Americans as sort of mascots. That's changing, slowly but fortunately, and ultimately, Daniel Snyder - who has indeed said publicly that he will never change the name - will eventually have to change the name. As well he should.

Difference being, a lot of other 'colors' at some point were not only stigmatized but self-stigmatized by their complexion.

I'm 3/8 Cherokee and have always been a little jealous of my other family member's complexion and features.

The industry of Indian art has maintained a staunch pride in their distinctive appearance to this day. I know because my mom drags us to every Indian exhibition we can get to and all our family members homes are filled with art depicting warriors and princesses.

I've never viewed red skin as a bad thing. I've always thought the logo for the Redskins [unlike cartoon logos] would be a handsome visage to possess. But then, to be fair, I didn't live on a reservation either.

I mean who wouldn't want to look like this, proud, virile, and you know that hair will be as luxuriant and black as in your senior years as in your youth [the one trait I did inherit]. Much like the tattooed Maori.

I haven't heard anyone object to the logo, just the name. I actually think the logo is quite dignified.

That's my point, it's a dignified red skinned man. What is demeaning about their complexion? It's a symbol of their life one with the earth on the unspoiled plains of America. There's no Biblical 'mark of Cain' connotation.

Maybe they should change it. I think it might be time to move on and forget the folks who were here squatting on our land before we got here.

Along with changing the name, it might be time to scrap the reservations they live on, tax the mother****ing shit out of their casinos (or let anybody compete with their asses), and cancel the agency that helps them.
