Anyone Following The Situation In The Thailand?

Quote:
Thailand’s Military Stages Coup, Thwarting Populist Movement

By THOMAS FULLER
MAY 22, 2014
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/23/wo...tary-coup.html

BANGKOK — The Thai military seized control of the country on Thursday and detained at least 25 leading politicians in a culmination of months of maneuvering by the Bangkok establishment to sideline a populist movement that has won every national election since 2001.

It was the second time in a decade that the army had overthrown an elected government, but there were signs that this takeover could be more severe and include sharp curbs on Thailand’s freewheeling news media.

You mean there's turmoil somewhere and there's no "because Obama" aspect? I think that might be newsworthy in itself.

"I don't think..." is a phrase commonly used to express disbelief in something.

I'm going to Thailand at the end of June. The only thing I'm worried about is the 10pm curfew. I hope they don't still have it in place by the time I get there. That would suck. I've been planning and saving for this trip for 6 months!

Pretty much! I missed my one chance to see any of Thailand when I was in the area back in the day of sailing the world all due to a coup.

Thailand is one of the best emerging market countries out there and their debt is in quite a few funds out there, so it came up during our quarterly due diligence and that's when one of our bond managers pointed out the stunning regularity of Thailand's coups.

No doubt. You cover a lot in your quarterly due dilligence. Laughable

Yes, we do dipshit. I'm an asset allocator. We use 32 funds across 6 base portfolios with 6 risk levels within those portfolios. We are obligated to review quarterly performance, conduct conference calls about our existing funds and potential funds, and document our activities. We just wrapped up our Q1 due diligence requirements (I'm responsible for almost all of it), and Q2 due diligence efforts will start at the beginning of June.

EM debt is a differentiator currently as we have one fund that looks like they may be doubling down on losing positions (which means they have the potential to be eliminated if they aren't able to turn their performance around) and other funds that are successfully navigating EM debt markets. So, yea, Thailand has been a position that has been questioned in terms of thesis and risk (this was before the coup).

Edit: Oh, and our AUM hit $1 billion today in our product. We allow our advisors to copy our portfolios as well and have another $2 billion in copy cat portfolios.
