White House shifts blame to Hagel for terrorist swap

Now the White House says Hagel made final call on Bergdahl as criticism of Obama over prisoner swap mounts

*Congress learned on Monday that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel gave final approval for the prisoner exchange that freed Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl
*Last week, Hagel said the swap was a unanimous decision made by senior officials
*Hagel is expected to defend the prisoner exchange on Wednesday in an appearance before the House Armed Services Committee

FInal approval for the prisoner exchange that freed Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was made by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, members of Congress learned on Monday from administration officials.

'They indicated (it was) Secretary Hagel (who made the final call),' Rep. Buck McKeon (R-CA) said after a classified briefing, ABC points out.

'It was the president of the United States that came out (in the Rose Garden) with the Bergdahls and took all the credit and now that there’s been a little pushback he’s moving away from it and it’s Secretary Hagel?'

Last week, Hagel said the swap was a unanimous decision when speaking to the BBC.

'It was the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Director of National Intelligence, Attorney General,' he said.

'It was our judgement based on the information that we had that his life, his health were in peril,' Hagel also told the channel in defense of not giving Congress 30 days' notice of the plan.

'Can you imagine if we would have waited or taken the chance of leaks over a 30-day period?' Hagel said.

Congress was upset to learn on Monday that 80 to 90 people in the Obama administration knew of the exchange - but that no Republicans or Democrats in the House were told.

'It strikes me as unfortunate that they could have 80 to 90 people in the administration aware of what was happening and not be able to trust a single Republican or Democrat in the House or the Senate,' Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), said, Reuters points out.

''There was a sense of anger that members of Congress didn’t know about this,' Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) said to reporters after the briefing, ABC notes. 'Obviously, if there is secure information — members of Congress knew about the capture of Osama bin Laden — and yet 80 to 90 staff in the White House knew about this.'

Hagel is expected to defend the prisoner exchange on Wednesday in an appearance before the House Armed Services Committee.

He exchanged some uncharged, Taliban pows that had been rotting in gitmo for a decade plus for an American pow. And the problem is?

The fact that there is even a discussion about whether an American pow should have been left in enemy hands is ****ing stupid.

Those 5 Taliban pows were super-strong and invincible Taliban masterminds who, once returned to the 1000s of other assholes just like them, will prove impossible to defeat! Those 5 will doom us--doom us all!

Sort of...odd...that this "story" is being "broken" by the Dailymail and no other news source has corroborated yet.

I will wait to see how this develops a bit before commenting.

All this outrage is a rush to judgement. No one knows the full story of Bergdahl's disappearance.

Not surprisingly, this whole matter from Bergdahl to the idea of this swap being bad is being coordinated by a Republican NeoConservative strategist's PR firm of Richard Grenell. Grenell was an assistant to rabid hawk John Bolton. He also worked for the Romney campaign for a short bit. Grenell has been the contact point for Bergdahl's fellow solidiers getting themTV time on most of the NeoCon talk shows and media as well as in the press. This way the NC's will have a scapegoat for why we lost Afghanistan. They can blame it all on this and not how Afghanistan was conducted as bad policy.

Back to Bergdahl:
There's just not enough known about the circumstances of Bergdahl's disappearance. Per a Wiki Leaks document of a classified military document Bergdahl was captured while at their latrine.

Other disturbing information that has been under reported is that Bergdahl's fellow soldiers had been committing war atrocities, that went unpunished and was joked about. Two incidents are of running over Afghan children and then laughing about it to the parent's and family's faces. Do these soldiers not want any fingers pointed at them? Is this their way of keeping this from happening by destroying Bergdahl's credibility first? The NeoCons behind this, including unfair attacks on Bergdahl's family are not good people. So it wouldn't surprise me.--at all. They are nasty people who lied us into war. There's even missing information as to who these swapped Taliban were. I'll get to that next.

As far as I am concerned the buck on this stops at the Commander in Chief--not Hagel. This is turning out to be unpopular so the finger pointing has begun--even Democrats are picking up that this is unpopular. What a bunch of wimpy opportunists.

Here's some facts about these Taliban who were swapped. How dangerous are they really? I already posted the kind of people who are behind this coordinated strategy of turning this into a scandal. The Taliban were not behind 9/11 and were never the enemy as far as I am concerned. It's part of the mission creep. They offered to turn over Bin Laden provided they had proof. Bush refused it. Now this is not to say they are good people--just that they were not behind 9/11.

Commenting on the prisoner swap, McCain said on CNN’s "State of Union" the five released Gitmo detainees are "hardcore military jihadists who are responsible for 9/11″ and “I wouldn’t release these men, not these men. They were evaluated and judged as too great a risk to release."

None of these statements are even remotely true:
and, what’s more, the Senator surely has access to information directly contradicting his assertions. So either he’s lying, or he’s gone senile.

First, as to the specifics on the released Taliban prisoners: Anand Gopal, a policy analyst with the New America Foundation, points out here, that, far from being hardcore jihadists, "all five of the swapped prisoners were initially captured while trying to cut deals, and like [former Taliban governor of Herat Khairullah] Khairkhwa, three had been attempting to join, or had already joined, the Afghan government at the time of their arrest."...

Mohammad Nabi Omari,
another of the five detainees, was actually working for the Americans – the CIA – when he was arrested by Pakistani border police and shipped off to Guantanamo.

Why was he arrested? Because the US government was handing out cold hard cash – lots of it – in exchange for "intelligence," and Omari’s many enemies took advantage of this bonanza to accuse him of harboring pro-Taliban sympathies – when, in reality, he opposed the Taliban because he believed they had provoked the American attack by harboring Osama bin Laden. According to another former jihadist who switched sides "He would sit there and tell me, ‘if I see a Talib, I won’t even let him take a piss, I’m going to turn him in.’" As it turned out, however, he was the one who got turned in. Was he set up, or was he setting others up? We’ll probably never know, but this seems like another case of the US government’s perpetually crossed signals.

As the Americans were driving into the heart of Afghanistan in the winter of 2001, another of the five, Abdul Haq Wasiq, an official in the Taliban’s intelligence agency, tried to make a deal with the CIA, and traveled to meet them: but the CIA wasn’t interested. What they wanted was bin Laden and other top Al Qaeda commanders, and Wasiq had no access to them. So instead of cutting a deal with a top Taliban leader – Wasiq was negotiating on behalf of his boss, intelligence chieftain Qari Ahmadullah – Wasiq was bundled up and sent to Guantanamo.

The other two, Mullah Mohammad Fazl and Mullah Norullah Noori were Taliban commanders who surrendered to Abdul Rashid Dostum, who massacred their footsoldiers – thousands of them – by imprisoning them in airless storage containers. Fazl and Noori were handed over to the Americans, who sent them to Guantanamo. Of these two, only Fazl’s record shows any evidence of "hard-line" views or the commission of war crimes.

And of course McCain’s accusation that these five are somehow responsible for the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon is bonkers: Al Qaeda is not the Taliban. Does anyone really think bin Laden consulted with Mullah Omar and the Taliban before planning and executing the 9/11 attacks? Indeed, the official Taliban response to Washington’s demand to hand over bin Laden was to ask for evidence of Al Qaeda’s guilt. This was ignored, and instead the US invaded the country, failing to get bin Laden or any of the other top Al Qaeda leaders.

Taliban Prisoner Swap: A Fact-Free Controversy
The US mission in Afghanistan has been an EPIC FAIL! Poorly defined which allowed mission creep from getting Bin Laden to a nation building occupation in a land known as the "Graveyard of Empires."

The wrong people are on Fox lying their little arses off or they are in just a very bad case of denial. It's on things like this I have to turn it off.

It's a matter of opinion if it's gone wrong.

Usually, when reporters talk about the "white house", they mean the President, the VP, the national security council, the press secretary, and the political team. They use something like "administration" when they want to include the various cabinet departments.

Based on the factual history of Obama and his Admin, is it really a stretch to believe they are passing the blame?
