Pew: the more liberal one is, the more accepting of compromise they become.

Pew put out an absolutely fascinating 11-page look at the political landscape amongst American citizens. It is highly worth a read.

The main theme: we have gotten very polarized as a population over the past 20 years.

However, this particular develop fascinated me:

Quote:
Compromise in Principle vs. Compromise in Practice

In principle, most Americans want their political leaders to compromise. A 56% majority prefers political leaders who “are willing to compromise,” while 39% prefer leaders who “stick to their positions.” And this preference has a decidedly ideological tilt: Consistent liberals overwhelmingly prefer leaders who compromise (by an 82% to 14% margin), while consistent conservatives voice a preference for leaders who stick to their positions, by a 63% to 32% margin.

Despite liberals’ stated preference for compromise, however, they are about as likely as conservatives to want political agreements that favor their side. Although 82% of consistent liberals prefer leaders who compromise, 62% say the optimal deal between Obama and the GOP should be closer to what Obama wants. Among consistent conservatives, there is less of a contrast: 57% say that when Republicans and Obama need to strike a deal, Republicans should get more of what they want. That’s in line with the 63% majority who say they prefer leaders who stick to their positions.

Your own link disproved your headline by noting libs want their way in deals, as much as conservatives do. If anything it proves yet again how phony Liberals are.

I think that study shows what the reality is. When liberals talk about compromise, what they mean is they want the other side to cave.

When the Obama administration claims that the republicans refused to compromise on a budget, it means the democrats refused to compromise and the republicans refused to grant them their every wish.

What is seen as a compromise is often a half step in the direction of bigger government and more centralized control instead of a full step. Given that, it's no surprise that those in favor of more government and more centralized control would favor compromise more than those who want less of it.

As an example, look at the Bush prescription drug program. The democrats had succeeded in making prescription drugs for seniors a significant campaign advantage. GWBush and his "compassionate conservative" political advisers sought to defuse the democrat political advantage by proposing a plan that would satisfy the public demand without going as far as democrats wanted to. It was a lesser version, but it was still a new entitlement. Is that really a compromise between those who wanted more government programs and conservatives who wanted fewer? Not really.

True. Obama's version of compromise is deciding which minor concessions (from his ultimate preference) he's willing to make, without respect to what his adversaries want, and then complaining when his opponents don't accept his take-it-or-leave-it final offer.

Exactly. Plus the left wants compromise in Obama's direction--even when it's something that is more a prerogative of congress to decide. They love one man rule.

Yeah, I was thinking something similar.

Personally I like it when both sides won't compromise on anything and we get stuck in grid-lock. The government works best when it can't progress, because government tends to progress in only one direction.

Buried in the report were 2 interesting nuggets:
*The median Republican is more conservative than 94% of Democrats, and the median Democrat is more liberal than 92% of Republicans

*"Consistent ideology" has risen since 1994 from 23% of Republicans to 36% today. Among liberals, it's risen from 8% to 38%

The media keeps pushing the narrative that the GOP has become way too conservative, but what they never seem to notice is just how partisan the typical Democrat has suddenly become.

That is probably incorrect on both parts.

I think the party not in the white house is often going to have this mentality because they feel they have more of an uphill battle to get their way.

But Republicans also can't continue to ignore these polls and then blame others for it. We've seen repeatedly that Americans seem to be leaning more and more to agreeing with the new Republican position on fiscal responsibility, but respond very unfavorably to the extreme hardlining stance and the antics used to make that point. I don't know how anyone can be surprised by this data given their behavior during the government shutdown.
