Examining what kind of president Hillary would be

Interesting article on the kind of president Hillary would be:

A UNIFIED THEORY OF HILLARY
To understand what kind of president she would be, consider that her greatest successes and worst failures have the same explanation.

Highlights:
  • On November 3, 1973, Hillary Clinton, then 26 years old, learned that she had failed the Washington, D.C., bar exam... In their mostly flattering book, HRC, Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes offer a plausible theory: Hillary was "a great student," but she "didn't have the vision to see the trouble some of her peers identified and adjusted for." Does this ancient, obscure episode have any bearing on what kind of president Hillary Clinton would be? It just might.
  • AT BEST, HILLARY CLINTON could be the Lyndon Johnson to Barack Obama's John F. Kennedy: the tough-minded successor who achieves what their more charismatic, but less politically savvy, predecessor could not...Hillary could prove to be a more effective inside-Washington player than any White House Democrat since LBJ.
  • Throughout his presidency, Bill had trouble making decisions, in part because he had trouble telling people things they didn't want to hear. By contrast, Hillary, even as an undergraduate at Wellesley, was "notably direct in almost everything she did," Bernstein writes. She went on to play the same role in his campaigns that George W. Bush played in his father's: She handled problems the candidate could not, or would not. Bernstein quotes a campaign staffer in Arkansas who recalls that she "was the one that laid the law down."
  • If Hillary's primary edge over her husband is her mental toughness, her biggest advantage over Obama is her skill in cultivating political relationships....she nurtures alliances in a way Obama does not.
  • There are many reasons the Clinton health care reform effort failed...Hillary's failure to see that her model, which she had developed in Arkansas, was not working and needed to be altered midstream. Her political failure lay in her inability to see how dramatically the center of gravity in her party was shifting away from her point of view.
  • Part of the problem was the fierce culture of loyalty within her inner circle, which prevented aides from warning her that her strategy was going awry...Hillary's aides "managed to build wall after wall around the first lady."
  • IF HILLARY'S FAILURE to improvise contributed to the demise of health care reform, it also contributed to her greatest foreign policy blunder—her support for the Iraq War—and her subsequent loss to Barack Obama in 2008.
  • in 2003, when blogs like Daily Kos and activist groups like MoveOn.org powered Howard Dean's stunning insurgency... Hillary and her top advisers were remarkably slow to recognize that the ground was shifting underneath their feet, and that the centrist strategy they had laid out at the beginning of her Senate career was now dangerously outdated... it is extraordinary that at a time when the "netroots" were remaking the Democratic Party, Hillary put her fate in the hands of a consultant who not only discounted their influence but loathed them.
  • her "tunnel vision"—in the words of a close friend quoted in Sally Bedell Smith's For Love of Politics—might produce a presidency more stylistically akin to that of George W. Bush.

One of the best analysis pieces I've read to date on Hillary - spot on:

I listened with much chuckling to Hillary getting pressed on her gay marriage stance yesterday. I'm not sure when the interview was conducted, but it was amusing to listen to Hillary become agitated when asked about her stance on the issue suddenly changing and whether she was always for it but lying, or whether her stance has turned on a dime since the last election now that it's popular.

It was about a week ago, and it was great. She sounded awful. I gave her points towards the end when she admitted she never gave the subject much thought at all (until, of course, the issue became politically beneficial for her). I loved how the interviewer wasn't willing to just let the thing pass with an empty answer.

I think this is an excellent piece.

In Hillary's current PR push, she seems to have worked on the ability to evolve. It's just a book tour, but hey, a window into a candidate is a window into a candidate. Time will tell.

I agree she is more aggressive politically than Obama is, and fewer Presidents have ever tried less to woo Congress than this one has, so she'll be an upgrade in that regard.

I don't think her ability to "forge political relationships" is any real advantage over Obama, her husband, or any Democrat. Because we all know her election would just bring on 4 to 8 more years of complete and total Republican opposition, much like we've seen the past 8 years.

I have a hard time seeing how this disaster of a book roll-out can be perceived as "evolving." I'd say she's got more than enough kinks to work out.

Her book's a best seller. So, I'd say the rollout has accomplished it's main objective to make her money.

Regardless, as flawed as you've perceived it to be, she has publicly changed her positions on two issues of immense consequence: gay rights and the Iraq war. Again, it's just a book campaign, but it's what we have to work with now.

lol

Am I the only one who follows the news around this place. Her book is flopping. They advanced her 14 million on it, and it's broadly being panned as a flop (by past Clinton book standards) that isn't LIKELY to break even on that advance.
Based on its first week Bookscan numbers, the commercial reception for Hard Choices has been decidedly underwhelming: in its first week it sold just 85,721 print copies, compared to the 500k+ of Living History (source)
-----------------------
“Between us, they are nervous at S&S,” the source said. “It’s a bomb, but it will be interesting to see how they spin it.”
The magazine said that some 1 million copies of the book were reportedly shipped when it went on sale June 10.
“The 60K represents a less than 10 percent sell- through based on what they shipped,” the source said. “They will be lucky to sell 150,000 total lifetime.” (Source)
