How are Obama and the IRS getting away with a blatant coverup?

To understand the latest outrage in the IRS scandal, mull over what might happen if regulators found significant evidence to implicate Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein in an insider trading scheme.

Let’s say Blankfein asserted his Fifth Amendment right not to answer any questions. Say Goldman was subpoenaed to provide all of Blankfein’s emails. Goldman replied that, instead of complying with the subpoena, it was itself reviewing the emails in question and was considering which ones to release.

Now imagine that, nearly a year later, Goldman admitted that it had not, in fact, reviewed the emails in question, because they had been lost in a computer crash two months before it claimed to be reviewing them. Imagine Goldman also said copies of the emails were lost, because while under subpoena, it had destroyed the “backup tapes” (whatever those are) that held them and that it had also thrown away Blankfein’s actual hard drive.

Personally, I think it's still too early whether to question Obama's involvement. There certainly is a lot of smoke there - the number of IRS visits being an interestingly high number.

More what I have questions about is systematic pressure by Democrats to put try and get the IRS to put pressure on their political enemies. I have absolutely zero doubts about this taking place. That is why those emails are so damaging that they had to be destroyed. I truly believe that if they ever managed to recover those drives, the information there would be rich with Democrats pressuring Lerner into investigations - and Lerner taking action on just about each and every one of them.

Lack of good ole fashion investigative journalism in the media which is owned by a few with a certain ideology--except one other outlet that has an opposing ideology.

So, now what we get for news is ideology wars.

What does that have to do with destroying evidence in an investigation?

Did we blame Congress when Richard Nixon authorized the Watergate cover-up?

You're talking about a completely different issue, valid in its own right.

This specific issue appears at the minimum gross incompetence that needs to be brought to light and put on full examination, and at worst the systematic corruption of the IRS to prosecute political enemies. The timing of these failures makes it look a lot more like the latter than the former.

I love how people like teej never confront the whole "government employees are incompetent but are capable of pulling off grand conspiracies" issue.

They own the Justice Department, and Democrat pols in Congress aren't going to oppose them.

All you needed to see was a recap of the grilling of the official the other day who admitted that they'd destroyed these hard drives. When the democrats had a turn to question him, they'd just praise the IRS and talk about how helpful they'd been. One of them mournfully apologized for "the way [the person testified] had been treated" by those mean old Republicans who want to know what happened to the evidence.

(Obviously, the idea that these emails only lived on Lois Lerner's hard drive is ridiculous in the first place, but the hearing just illustrated that the Democrats present had no interest in finding out anything more)

Um, what? Pulling off? Nobody is really pulling anything off here. They're begging incompetence for what looks like corruption.

That can't last forever. This is one of those things where the Democrat party is eventually going to have to move to protect itself as an electable entity by calling for accountability. At the very least, they're going to have to call for the same kind of investigative review as what brought Shinseki to resign.

I just found something that makes this whole situation more interesting. I was expecting that you'd see Democrats in red states being the first to publicly call for further investigation into the IRS. So I did a search of "Kay Hagan IRS" and "Mary Landrieu IRS." What I found was that they may, in fact, both be involved with the systematic pressure by Democrats to put try and get the IRS to target their political enemies (along with nearly every Democrat senator who is facing a serious challenge this November.

This scandal isn't even about Obama (though he may be involved, who can say). It's about the Democrat party trying to use the IRS as political muscle.

This is going to get ugly.

No we didn't ( Noting but unsubstantiated speculation to follow) just more along the lines the it seems like congress was turning a bit of a blind eye to the situation. The Tea party types were upsetting the status quo with both parties… they don’t like their phony baloney jobs messed with. The inappropriate actions and criminal activities of the IRS to begin with and throughout the process is blatant enough that even if one is a staunch Liberal it should be disturbing. I’m just wondering out loud if we might have some really strange bedfellows in this mess and that might explain some things.
