How are Obama and the IRS getting away with a blatant coverup?

To understand the latest outrage in the IRS scandal, mull over what might happen if regulators found significant evidence to implicate Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein in an insider trading scheme.

Let’s say Blankfein asserted his Fifth Amendment right not to answer any questions. Say Goldman was subpoenaed to provide all of Blankfein’s emails. Goldman replied that, instead of complying with the subpoena, it was itself reviewing the emails in question and was considering which ones to release.

Now imagine that, nearly a year later, Goldman admitted that it had not, in fact, reviewed the emails in question, because they had been lost in a computer crash two months before it claimed to be reviewing them. Imagine Goldman also said copies of the emails were lost, because while under subpoena, it had destroyed the “backup tapes” (whatever those are) that held them and that it had also thrown away Blankfein’s actual hard drive.

I just found something that makes this whole situation more interesting. I was expecting that you'd see Democrats in red states being the first to publicly call for further investigation into the IRS. So I did a search of "Kay Hagan IRS" and "Mary Landrieu IRS." What I found was that they may, in fact, both be involved with the systematic pressure by Democrats to put try and get the IRS to target their political enemies (along with nearly every Democrat senator who is facing a serious challenge this November.

This scandal isn't even about Obama (though he may be involved, who can say). It's about the Democrat party trying to use the IRS as political muscle.

This is going to get ugly.

Yeah, unfortunately it can...

Just like in the days when Nixon was toppled, the press is wildly, incredibly biased...if Obama was a Republican he would have already been cuffed and frog-marched off to prison.

Actually, I don't think anyone would do anything to Blankfein either, but that's because the DOJ has been kid gloves with Wall Street for years.

But, make this into a small business, then absolutely, the federal prosecutor would be crucifying them.

The next step might be more firings. As I remember they had a few firings over this in Ohio - apparently Obama already had the "two Dilberts in Cincinnati" fired but they found some more people to offer as sacrificial . link

We won't see any widespread defection in the Democratic ranks on this, I don't think. This won't be like situations where vulnerable Democrats in an election year are given permission by leadership to vote against an unpopular bill the White House is pushing. This is a corruption scandal and there's not been even a smidgen of corruption, so everyone needs to stay on the ship for now. To start calling for more investigation or a special prosecutor would bring the wrath of the White house down on you.

There are people out there who know things, and there is probably evidence that a special prosecutor could get to, but the White House seems to be drawing the battle line there, at "no special prosecutor". No democrat is going to oppose them on that.

Here is the standard BTW:

§ 600.1 Grounds for appointing a Special Counsel.
The Attorney General, or in cases in which the Attorney General is recused, the Acting Attorney General, will appoint a Special Counsel when he or she determines that criminal investigation of a person or matter is warranted and—
(a) That investigation or prosecution of that person or matter by a United States Attorney's Office or litigating Division of the Department of Justice would present a conflict of interest for the Department or other extraordinary circumstances; and
(b) That under the circumstances, it would be in the public interest to appoint an outside Special Counsel to assume responsibility for the matter.

They've got another hearing with the IRS man again this evening. Guess what? The Democrats continue to run interference and praise the IRS.

I guess you're going to do this in two threads. I asked you how the Ds are obstructing this and you named exactly zero examples.

The difficult part is that it's easy to conflate the Democrat party and the IRS at this point. That's going to make for some interesting electoral dynamics.

Seems like you guys are having a pretty easy time doing it. So much so that HCF has convinced himself that House Ds are obstructing the investigation.

E-mails not gone now. Just hard to find.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said Justice Department lawyers informed him that the federal government keeps a back-up copy of every email and record in the event of a government-wide catastrophe.

The back-up system includes the IRS emails, too.

Pretty amazing, right? We know to the very last detail what Bain spent on installing new toilets, but we don't know a damn thing going on with the IRS.
